Horn beeps thrice

So the other day someone tried to change lanes on top of me on the freeway. I swerved and hit the horn and it beeped three times quite rapidly and I’m almost positive that I only hit it once. I know, RTFM, but I’m too lazy to dig it out of the glovebox. I think it’s a safety feature. Pretty cool. Or I’m just crazy.

Garage List
Nope

Never had that happen and I would suggest the horn responded to different levels of pressure while you beeped (once). I dont believe it is a safety feature per the manual - emergency brake lighting under hard breaking is to warn following traffic - but not the horn.

Would make you very popular if you beeped 3 times even if you're in the right in the UK.

How’s that? What does the triple beep mean in the UK?

It's probably like Spokenhands mentioned...you probably actually pressed three times on the horn. I've been able to do that for years on every BMW I've owned.

In fact, I've had passengers ask how'd I do that...and I asked "do what?"...and they said beep 3 times that fast.

It just happens...like if you need to get a driver in front of you to take notice that the light turned green 10 seconds ago...I don't particularly want to do a long honk...but just a few taps on the horn to get their attention...and it just happens...3 beep, beep, beeps occur.
