Arrow 6MT M3 Owners: How do you like the shifter?

I've had my 6MT M3 for a couple months now, and the one thing I don't particularly enjoy is the shifter.

1) As many magazine said, it is "rubbery", e.g. not stiff enough. Even after you are in a gear, you can move beyond the point and bend the shifter.

2) Gear engagement is not very crisp or precise. I remember that my 335 had better gear engagement - you push, it clicks into a gear, that's it. With the M3 shifting just doesn't feel clean, gear shifts are always acompanied by something extra in the way.

3) Shift throw is a bit too long. Too much for a sports car.

4) Shifter not ergonomical, I can never find the right grip. I think that the top face is too flat. The regular 3 series M-tech shifter felt much better.

Anyway, just wanted to hear what you all want to say about the shifter. Also, what are my options in terms of upgrading it to a SSK, etc?

Personally I find it quite comfortable. Not that I've driven lots of high end sports cars, but I have no complaints.

I think it feels similar the shifters in every other Bimmer I've owned.

Has anyone noticed how the leather from the boot is seamlessly connected with the smooth leather on the shifter? Can't tell if it's all one piece. Pretty cool!

At first the rubbery-ness bugged me. But it's broken in nicely (now at 3300 miles), and continues to get better. First gear, though, can still be horribly notchy occasionally. That's my biggest gripe.

I only agree with point 3. The throw is a little long in my taste, other than that I find the gear box wonderfull. And it is only getting better with use too!

It's considerably better than the shifter in my last car, a 2005 GTO. Shifting that thing was like rowing a boat.

I'd agree that the throw is a bit too long. Also, I find that 1st and 2nd can be notchy, especially cold. The placement of the shifter isn't ideal either. I find that from my ideal seating position, reaching for 5th requires a bit more of a stretch than I'd like.

I agree, I thought it was a bit long, but after driving a friends E46 M3, mine is a big improvement. I would like a slightly shorter throw though...

The throw length does not bother me. I found that with over 4,500 miles now the "notchiness", espcially 1-2, has improved greatly. Shift knobs are easy to replace if iyours doesn't suit you.

I really dislike my shifter. It's all the negatives that have been pointed out before. The other day I was in 6th and wanted to drop it into 3rd but instead I hit 5th by mistake. I find it too soft and ambiguous. When I drive my NSX, it reminds me of how a shifter should feel. Short shift kit with a notchier feel and a heavier shift knob would make me happy. But as you can tell, some people are happy with it and some are not. It's personal preference.

I have grown to like it. Just like someone else said, the more the miles, the better it gets.

So what short shift kit replacements are out there? BMW probably won't release one right?

I like the shifter, but I'm used to driving bimmers.

I changed one of my E46 M3's to a ssk and it changed the character of the car. I regretted it.
