stinky AC
Hi everybody just purchased 14 650, ac smells really bad
wondering if anybody has the same issue and knows where the ac drain tube/intake is? so i can spray lysol/foam cleaner into it. seems like this would be the best solution...owned e92, same awful smell |

Once you kill the bacteria/mold (this time)..you can help prevent the smell from returning by utilizing some features of the IHKA system and make sure that you don't park the car basically putting it away "wet" in a dark location with no air circulation.
The smell is coming from the growth of bacteria and mold...which loves darkness. So if you're running your AC on a hot humid day, then you park the car in your home garage or parking garage at work that is enclosed, dark and no air cirulation..then the problem will continue to occur (stinky AC). Things that you can do to help prevent the return of the stinky AC is to turn off the AC a few miles prior to your destination (if it is possible)...and keep the blower running to dry any condensate that has accumulated. If it's too hot/humid to turn off the AC a few miles prior to reaching your destination...and you know you will be parking in a dark location with little air circulation...then utilize one of the park-car ventilation features of the HVAC system. You can do this in iDrive and select an immediate venting session...which will run the HVAC blower for up to 30 minutes after turning the car off. Again, this will help dry up any residual condensate and prevent the growth of bacteria and mold. I used one of my programmable preset buttons (#2) so that I can quickly access and turn on the parked-car ventilation without having to drill down into iDrive to turn it on when needed. BTW, I've been using this OBC/IHKA feature for decades...going back to my 1985 e30 325e (which had the HIGH OBC)...and it does help prevent stinky AC

^This is critical to keep good hygiene to your evaporator. Turn off refrigerant flow to stop condensation on the evaporator while drying it with blower on and air flow.

[QUOTE=arucano;25279249]I installed something like this (negative ion generator) with the high voltage wire in the AC duct upstream of the evaporator in my E39 to get rid of that problem. It works great. Make sure the "comb" is not grounded.
