650 envy... why is it so...
I have had a number of less than pleasant experiences with some road going troglodytes. Mostly insistent morons in clapped out shitboxes riding my tail egging me to 'race'... apart from this behaviour being annoying its been a little dangerous at times. anyone else get this?
I do like the subtle acknowledgement I get when passing or seeing another 6ers driver on the road. Smile and wave is always nice. while filling up yesterday I had a gent pull up next to me in his GC and we exchanged some banter and appreciation for the cars. |

Never had anything dangerous happen at all, typically people either ignore the car completely or know exactly what it is and get quite excited.
In saying that, I know that I can leave a 430kw GTS behind quite comfortably

From car guys on the road we usually give each other the finger up and head nod. I’m not a racer. When I go for my venti Pike music collection cruises I do insist on my old recommendation of ‘one must go 120 mph at least once a day‘. I did race a guy in an orange Charger I think. Black stripe/orange corona running lights. I was in right lane (2 lanes) on an quiet interstate at cruise control of 72 mph drinking my coffee. I gets up on my left. I figured wtf, I might as well. Paddled down. WOT, and greased him. He obviously didn’t have the big engine. I put my cruise back on and turned the music back up. He wouldn’t pass me till he got off...
We car guys acknowledge each other (at least I do). Even the young guy with a modded up Honda. He’s poured his money, energy, and heart into it. I acknowledge that.

I don't typically get this in the 6 (maybe because mine's the less sporty 4-door), but I do get it often with the R8.
In any case, I usually just ignore them. People are morons, and they're not worth engaging 99% of the time. I'm not driving around looking for people to race - I'm either going somewhere or I'm out to enjoy a drive. In either situation, that doesn't involve reckless driving, ending up in jail, or worse yet - dead. In the remaining 1% of the time, I've engaged a person here and there... usually because I can tell they're having some good spirited fun, and it's not a wacko looking to prove something. There are some enthusiasts out there who just like to have a little sprint, want to enjoy the sites and sounds of the car being pushed a bit, etc, but they're not the type who are going to start cutting off traffic, weaving around people, or generally drive dangerously. Hard to make that judgment call for most, but the enthusiast type here is usually the guy who pulls up safely alongside, waves, gives a thumbs up, is driving a sports car, themselves, and appears to engage in a friendly bit of fun. Anyone engaging you in an unsafe manner (such as riding your tail), weaving, etc, is not worth it. If someone comes up on your rear bumper, just politely move over (assuming that's an option), let them pass, and feel pity on them... knowing that this was some important moment for their ego.

In more than a year and half I have had very few reactions to my car. A 5th grader gave me a thumbs up, a girl not much older said "cool car", and one guy in a 3 series asked me if it was 2015. Not sure how he knew. That's it. In my prior red Mercedes, an Hispanic woman yelled "rich white people" at me, and a homeless guy said "f*** you" at a stoplight. So overall, the BMW has been a step up.

Seems like it's a global thing. Often folks in tuned, older, Japanese cars will revv up and speed away at the sight of the 6er. I see quite a few other 6ers around and always wave when I do. Get comments from young kids all the time, and one guy in a 5er asked me if it's a V10. Also get compliments on the paint :-)

Of course there is 650 envy, especially 650 Gran Coupe envy. Here's why:
No other car offers its fantastic design, unique interior, amazing power, superb handling, luxury features, comfort for four passengers, decent trunk space and that amazing sports car sound and feel. IMHO, of course. |

I'm one of the biggest car guys I know and it's very disheartening to know that the future cars is actually quite bleak. I used to always look forward to next year's models and used to replace cars every 6 months to a year. Not anymore. |
