KERS or Turbo

Technologies will be carried over from F1 for sure, but how quickly? There are talks that //M might break away from the traditional natural induction engine. So what do you think it will be, KERS, turbo, both, or neither?

KERS are state of the art, but they only provide power gains in short bursts. While turbos's power boost is constant, there is a lag for them to spool up. So can using both be the answer? Will KERS cover the lag period of the turbos and become the perfect engine setup? Or will //M adhere to tradition and continue to exploit the high-revving concept?

Take the poll!

I voted turbo only because of what I've seen developing for the next M5. I hate that they can't lose weight, instead. Who says more power is better? I would MUCH rather have a lighter car.

Me too, there is plenty of power in the car as it is, but less weight would allow for better handling, acceleration, braking, etc..

By the way, your sig pic is very cool.

KERS = Kinetic Energy Recovery System. Basically, it changes the energy from motion of the car into some other form during deceleration. The energy stored can be in different forms: batteries, capacitors, or a flywheel. The battery method is already being used in many hybrids; however, since batteries rely on a chemical reaction to release its energy, it cannot provide a significant power gain for performance cars. KERS, which will be used in F1 next season, relies on capacitors or supercapacitors. Capacitors can release energy very quickly - up to 80bhp for periods of less than 7secs per lap. The alternative of a high revving (up to 66,000 rpm) is also being looked into.

Haha, that's actually a good idea to use a KERS system to make up for turbo lag. You could also use it as a way to fix the top-end on most FI cars.

I absolutely agree! The solution less weight, not more power. Yes more power will improve straight line speed and accleration, but a weight reduction will do the same while benefiting all the other aspects of driving. You will turn quicker, there will be less roll, and you will stop faster. Lightening your ride is the key! Less is more!
