► NJ Charges Tax On Shipped Of State Purchases ?
i live in ny and plan on buying a watch in nj. i requested the watch to be shipped to me to avoid taxes, but the store said due to a new nj law they are required to charge tax on all purchases regardless of where its shipped.
in the past tax was only charged, if the retailer had a presence in shipped state. when did this change take place? kinda blows if true, i know the tristate has been cracking down and trying to implement regulations but didn't think any were set in place.

I think that's been the case for a while now. I try to buy big purchases in Delaware to avoid this. But you can't have it shipped...So I drive and pick it up.

Yes sadly that is the case. There are only a handful of states that you can ship to in order to avoid sales tax.
And the eBay thing pisses me off even more for used items. eBay adds the sales tax automatically on the purchase based on the state the item is being shipped to. Pretty soon we will have to start paying sales tax at garage sales. |
