Cant change gear when Im at ~8000 RPM
Hi guys,
When I try to shift gear at ~8000RPM and more the clutch pedal move back and I cant change gear ! The shift lever is very very hard (Im definitly not very strong but even my mechanic told me that there is problem when he tried it himself) He told me that I needed to replace the clutch, what do you guys think ? I also need to change the DMF because I have a late 2008 model... My car is a 6 speed manual. Thanks for your help. |

The clutch in these cars are really stout, they handle power and mileage.
I would guess your issue may be motor mounts and trans mounts. I've heard flex in the drivetrain can lead to things locking in, and not lining up when you're giver'n. Again, this is just a guess. If the clutch isn't slipping at the high RPM, I wouldn't be replacing that first. |

My previous M3 was an early 2008, and this happend to me as well. In my case, getting a transmission oil change mostly resolved that...also as others have mentioned changing the motor mounts makes a great difference too as the mounts tend to squat down a good 1/2” over the years.
Let us know if either helps ! GM |

Agree on the mounts. If your engine can "twist" due to one or both of the mounts not being able to handle the added rotational mass created by the higher rpm. I gotta think a bad clutch would show itself in some more obvious ways.
This is just my speculation, ymmv. Hope it's something inexpensive. |

Hi thanks,
I forgot to say that my car has ~74000 miles. I did buy new motor mounts and trans mounts when I bought the new clutch and DMF, I'm gonna ask my mecanic to only change those first to see if the problem persist.. Thanks for your help, will keep you informed ! |

I'm guessing there is flex on your drivetrain at the higher rpms and that's keeping you "locked" into gear. Dudes on here have stock clutch with 200,000+ miles, and 650+hp. Clutch on our cars are very stout.... |

By the mileage, I think your engine mounts are pretty toasted, causing this problem.
And not related to the problem, but, as members said above, your rod bearings, if originals, should be too. You should give top priority to them, since your chances in the german lottery are growing each day, to win the prize of a dead engine. |

Check your brake fluid.
If it goes low, the clutch is the first to suffer, as the brakes are safety priority. How were the engine mounts, by the way? Picture doesn't load here, if hosted in outer website. |

If the transmission fluid hasn't been changed, do it, you need to anyways at around 60-80K miles. It helped my car smooth out high RPM shifts.
Also, these shifters aren't very smooth when you try to slam into gear, you kind of have to "gently walk" it into second gear. GM |

I will check my brake fluid but Im afraid that It's fine..
The transmission oil was changed when I did the rod bearings alongside the gearbox oil I understand that the shifter is not smooth in this car, but It's not normal that my clutch pedal go to the floor.. Thanks for your help guys, will keep you updated If I found the problem |

If the clutch fluid goes to the floor I would bleed the slave. I assume you did that, but some bleeding procedures work better than others. I pull the slave, point the bleed up, open the bleed, depress the piston, close the bleed and repeat. It’s a little tricky for one person until you get the hang of it. And of course if the brake fluid level drops too far you suck air into the clutch hydraulic line so you have to watch the level.
It may be that your mechanic is right and the clutch is worn out. It could also be the pivot pin is worn down. I don’t know whether these cars use plastic pins. |

based on the wording of his question regarding 8000RPM shifts there was some abuse at play.
