If anyone is looking now, I thought seriously about picking up this 128i slicktop/6mt/msport, but ended up finding a really clean 135 that I couldn’t resist. These guys are a pretty legit dealer in San Diego. They tend to get a lot of rarer and cleaner e8x and e9x cars.

He also jokes about just how much it takes to make it truly competent.

Can confirm, it does take A LOT

I don't know. Great color combo, 6MT, slicktop, M-Sport package, relatively low miles, and sold by a dealer (i.e., always higher than private sale). Seems about right to me. Plus you could probably talk them down a little. About the only thing that car is missing to mkae it perfect would be xenons, shame it wasn't spec'ed with them.

I actually looked and test drove that exact car unfortunately its extremely over priced for it's condition. The car itself is originally from Florida and I personally think it was probably in a flood because there was mold/algae grown in the fog lights and for some reason you can't tell from the pictures but the car has small dings/dents on literally every panel. The other thing that bothered me was all 4 tires were different brands and the car sagged more on one side then the other also the plastics and stereo buttons on the interior were badly worn as of the previous owner had extremely oilly fingers. Realistically that car should be priced around 5-6k IF that.

I just hope the ricers don't pick up on this car. Eventually every cheap car gets picked up by them, hopefully more publicity will keep the 1er values high.

Oh, they're already there. High mileage automatic 128i's are easily low-$5k cars. 128i's that aren't so desirably spec'd (like mine) are getting there, too. It's slowly becoming the high school poser's parent's cheap first car of choice.

So are 135i's, as evidenced by the burble tune crowd and all the morons claiming 500whp on stock turbos in their clapped-out automatic cars

The "BMW 128i" Facebook group is both a humorous treat and a real-life horror story.

I'm still confident that these cars will start rebounding in value relatively soon. The niche enthusiast cars of the late 90's and early 00's, particularly the really good examples, are going for crazy amounts on auction sites. Our cars are in the mid-late 00's crowd, so they'll be next, maybe.

Great summary

I figured this out a few years ago as my e36m3 replacement. Great for track and street. Drive it home after every event and not too precious to possibly wreck on a track day. Don't forget you can haul your track wheels in the back seat along with all your gear. You Can't do that with any of his previous choices.

I also thought 135 was the solution. But after seeing so many of them breaking down on track days, I came to the same conclusion. I'm keeping mine and will watch values rise in the future.

They've had them for years, seemingly more in the UK bases on the half dozen Facebook groups for these cars.

I could see that happening much the way e30's values have risen since we are the last of the mechanical feeling BMW's.

I will say though, 135i's aren't the problem in my opinion, n55's seem far more reliable than 54's, and it seems the problems only really start when you start adding power mods. I've had most of the common n55 issues, but I'd still say my car is reliable. Nothing broke that was shocking for a 10 year old car.

Yeah there's a 1 series Facebook group for every day of the week. Usually just dudes asking if their N47 timing chain is about to blow up and garbage coilover recommendations.

Oh, lord. I finally joined that group a few months ago just to check it out. Turns out, it's horrible. I don't think I lasted a week before I left the group. It was just full of completely asinine questions, with even more asinine answers. The main goal of most of the people on there seems to be to identify ways to make your car shittier, for as cheap as possible.

That’s good to know. Glad I didn’t waste time heading down to San Diego to check it out. I’ve had two friends buy cars from this dealer in great condition in the past, so figured I’d bring it up. Now everyone knows to stay away from it.

No worries wish I had known myself I drove a few hrs to see it too only to be extremely disappointed the owner of the dealership won't move on the price at all either unfortunately.

The shocker is still a thing?
I remember it being constantly used in the mk4 vw days. Those were fun days.
