Only 1262 Miles and more issues!

Hello guys,

As some of you may remember my last post, few months ago when i bought my brand new 2020 M4, i had a CEL come on at 57 miles on the car. Took it in to BMW and they said it was a bad coil on cylinder 1 and they replaced the coil and the spark plug.

Fast forward to a week ago without any further issues, i took my car in for my 1200 mile break-in service and everything was fine and no issues and i picked up my car.

Few days after, I'm casually cruising down the freeway, the "Drivetrains Malfunction" light comes on and the car goes into what i believe is called limp mode along with the CEL. My car sounded like lawnmower that had no oil and was also vibrating. I immediately pulled over and turned off the car. waited a few min, started back up and it was as if never happened. No CEL, and car drove fine. I took it straight to the dealer.

Today they sent me the codes and told me they replaced cylinder 2 coil and spark plug because they were misfiring and both had very heavy corrosion. I will attach the codes they sent me below.

I am beyond frustrated of why this keeps happening on a brand new car What should i do? Should i push them to at least replace all plugs and coils just incase? Should i start the "lemon" conversation? I will be going to the dealer later today to talk to the SA. Any tips are appreciated.

Well third time this happens it will qualify as a lemon. I would seek an explanation from corporate why this is happening. Not a common problem at all. If they can't figure out why this is happening get a new engine!

Do you think I should give BMW N/A a call before I head to the dealer?

I would let them know this is unacceptable and that you want someone to give you a detailed explanation. This car is brand new. I would be concerned keeping it past warranty if it gave this many problems so soon into ownership. Something like this out of warranty would cost a fortune I'm sure.

Absolutely. These are serious problems no new car should have. Tell them you have every intention of filing a lemon law claim as soon as you are eligible. Maybe they'll work with you proactively?

quick update. I received a call from the shop foreman to go over in details what was going on with my car. He said after inspecting the Cylinder 2 coil, they found it to be defective and warped in a way that it was not seating and sealing properly and that was the reason for the corrosion and misfires. He mentioned that they checked all other coils and plugs and everything is clean and in working order.

He assured me that he has seen this before and after this replacement, i will not have any issues. He mentioned that if i encounter any issues after this, he will open a case with BMW and help me escalate this. Long story short, he said he will put the car through a extensive test drive tomorrow (About 20 miles) and if everything checks out then i can pick her up.

Thankfully, i have not done any performance mods yet on the car and have not really pushed it that hard other than the occasional pulls here and there after the break in. Lets see how things go, fingers crossed.

I will post an update once i pick her up.

20 miles isn't a lot. The fact that you will be worried to push the car or to tune it ruins the experience. I would ask them to file the claim to see why it was like that to begin with.

Hmm seems fishy. Going to be hard to get anywhere is they replace coil pack two and problem doesn't show again

Sounds like a bummer op. Platform is very reliable. You have the warranty so if it continues to crap out than you can start going lemon

Quick update: I called and spoke to BMW N/A and explained the situation. They said that i will need to call back when i have the vehicle in my possession to be able to escalate it which i find sort of odd. At this point i am waiting for the shop foreman to contact me after his "extensive test drive" and let me know if the vehicle can be picked up.

Also a side note that i forgot to mention. The vehicle is a lease which i was planning to potentially buy-out at the end of the term. Now with all this, i don't think i will be taking that route.

unless, if this never happens again and the car is rock solid until end of my lease, i might proceed with the buy out. However, if there is more issues like this, i will definitely push for lemon and get out of this vehicle as soon as i can.

your tips and advice is always appreciated. For now, i can't wait to get her back and drive!

Picked her up today. Drove around and did some pulls. put about 20 miles on her and no issues. The car seems to be revving and pulling much harder then before. Loving it. Hoping this was the end of issues and no more "factory defects". Now I'm thinking to go with VRSF Single Mid pipe

Its easier said then done. Cant just replace a car due to couple of failed spark plugs and wires. Now if issues continue, then ill have a good case.
