What size 20" for 40e

Im picking up a used 40e tomorrow that has 19s on it. I want to get a set of 20" wheels for summer and the wheel finder on tirerack is showing the OEM 20"size as being staggered. Being and AWD car is this not bad for it? Should I get the staggered sizes recommended by tire rack or is there a non staggered size i should use?

It is staggered so just get whatever tire rack shows you.

Oem 20 only come staggered. And if you run the oem size tires, you'll be ok since they have the same diameter.
You could run a square setup with aftermarket wheels.

If they are summer wheels, I would imagine grip/performance would be a top concern. In that case, a staggered setup will likely give you optimal results. With that said, the front and rear tires have to be within a certain differential or it will negatively affect the AWD system. Generally what you will see is something like a 20x10 (front) and 20x11 (rear) wheel setup with 275 (front) and 315 (rear) tire setup. Alternatively (specifically in the case of the X5M wheel models, the staggered tires run 285/325. Hope this helps.

If you do a google search for your model/model year BMW owners manual PDF...you should see what the BMW recommended 18" & 19" (square) set-up is...as well as the 19"/20"/21" staggered set-up is...and that The TireRack suggestions are on point:

Example from the X35i/X35d (should be the same for the 40e):
