Cooling issues, 2017 X5 (F15)

Hello and good day to all my BMW enthusiasts. I'm looking to you all for help with my issue regarding cooling. It's a long story but I will give you the highlights.

- Purchased my X5 in Jan. 2020, 68000 miles. Came with a 90 day from the dealership. XDrive 35i, 3.0L, 6 cylinder.
- In March COVID hit and the sat for a few months.
- In May was the first drive and experienced a water pump failure. Went to the dealer to see if they would cover and they did not, spent $2000 on the repair.
- October, had a temperature warning on the dash, temp hit 250F.
- Took the X5 back to the dealer and now it is the auxiliary fan, replacement $1935, they offered $200 off.

So the part is $735 online for the aux. fan. Should I replace myself or take it to a BMW mechanic, not associated wit the dealer. They are offering at $1250 out the door and will guarantee the work. $500 or so savings if I DIY but now I have zero confidence in my X5.

Any thoughts or instruction on how to replace?

Thanks in advance for reading and for contributing, if you do so.

Cheers!

Specifying engine would be a good start to seek answers to questions like that.

If you are out of warranty, why bother with the dealership? Coolant system on 3.0 is not that advanced to deal with, if you don't feel comfortable find a good local indy BMW shop and bring your car over there. If you have garage and tools just DIY it. Download ISTA so you have newtis info and have fun. $2000 for water pump is crazy expensive in my opinion. My BMW dealer once offered me to fix the rattling plastic intake for $2000, local body shop who installed my front lip did it for $700 parts and labor.

Do you know if the bumper needs to be removed? This is what I am struggling with.

Thanks,

Reading on some of the forums, I'm not convinced that the aux. fan is the issue. Could be the wiring or the ECM.

Thanks,
Isn't the fan on the engine side of the radiator? I see no reason the bumper needs to be removed. Should be fairly simple.
I'd get a multimeter to verify you have voltage going to fan when commanded. Or you can try hotwiring power to the fan to see if it works. Like you said, it could be a relay or fuse or??
