Most likely a failed electric water pump. Is your auxilliary fan quite loud as well?
Check out the links on this site for a class action lawsuit. Since yours is a 2011, it might still be covered under the BMW N/A warranty which was extended to 10 years. |

Yes, but I recall you have to produce a receipt from a BMW dealer or certified repair shop and proof of payment.

I posted a thread on this settlement recently.
You need your receipt from BMW or repair shop and even more challenging is proof you actually paid it (like a years-old credit card statement).

UPDATE: As of December 2020, the BMW Coolant Pump Class Action Settlement is now open. Click here to file a claim. BMW drivers have reached a proposed class action settlement with the automobile manufacturer, which would end their claims that some BMW vehicles possessed defective engine coolant pumps, but the manufacturer misrepresented them as functional. Now, they are asking a New Jersey federal judge to grant preliminary approval to the settlement. The settlement would cover a range of vehicles made between 2007 and 2019. Models allegedly affected by the defect include the 135i, 335i, 525i, 640i, 740, X1, X3, X4, X5, X6, Z4 vehicles, though the affected model years vary for each vehicle. About 563,227 Class vehicles were reportedly sold across the United States and in Puerto Rico.

What about 128i ?
The 525i is in the list. I don't think there is a model year 525i that used the same water pump as the 135i.
If the 525i uses the same waterpump as the 128i, why is the 128i omitted? Maybe a typo and should be the 535i?? Edit: Found this site https://electriccoolantpumpsettlemen...mmon-Questions so it does appear it should be the 535i.
