because most times they suck in more hot air than cold air due to poor placement and lack of heat shielding. other times, you risk hydrolocking your car b/c in an attempt to get more air from beneath, or closer to the grill, you leave yourself more exposed to water possibly entering. and lastly, the filters aren't as good as stock and you end up sucking in more crap than you'd like.
oh yea, and the filters they send you are for $400 when it could be made with home depot materials for $25 |

well the stock intake on the S54 engine is basically the best intake available. other than the CSL airbox. it flows the best. i doubt it is any different for the 3.0. BMW has done there homework. aftermarket intakes are just for sound on these cars. they will yield maybe a couple horsepower but nothing huge.
another thing is when you mess with your intake there is a chance you will encounter problems like heatsoak...idle problems not to mention your engine warranty is basically void. not the stuff i want to deal with for just some sound. IMO |

I thought about a new intake also, but instead went with a K&N Free-Flow filter for the stock air box. It's an approved Dinan product that will give you 4-5 HP 5 lbs of torque for $55.

dont get me wrong, i'm sure that rpi scoop works and in fact they posted a dyno. but i just dont want to run the chance of having water get in there. you'll hear people say that the chances of that happening are 1 in a million but honestly, i can recall this one time in my other car when i drove through water 2 feet high... and i live in friggin NJ, not Florida. we had this crazy rainstorm for the whole day, highways were shutdown and i remember praying that my cold air intake wouldn't suck any water. on my old car, the intake hose was placed near the fog light so it could suck "cold" air away from the turbo. it actually worked great and there were noticeable gains, but just wasn't worth the risk.
oh yea, if you want better flow while retaining the stock intake, try a better filter. i personally am not a fan of the reusable k&n filters. see if ITG makes a filter for our cars. i used to run that on my old audi and alot of s4 guys got great results from it. and that foam filter blocks out just as well as the stock paper filter. |
