New Z4
Here's what I stumbled upon on the way back from Nurburgring today...

Yes, he was pushing it a bit here and there. Why not, it's not his car.

Of course. But I just pointed the camera without attempting to frame the pic. YOu can see we weren't going that fast (I think maybe 130 km/h) as we're just about to hit your favorite road sign (check the background)...

You're quick on the draw. Every time I see a rare car I want to shoot, it's gone before I even think of pulling my cell phone. One of these days I'll have to ask the kids that take pictures of my M how they do it. There were a few flashes going off on the way to dinner yesterday and my date looked around in surprise. "What was that?" "People in the SUV at 7 o'clock were taking pictures." "Of...?" "I'm guessing there's an Amber Alert out - how old did you say you were again?" "Ha!" "The car - it happens all the time. Most people don't even know what it is, besides 'a BMW.'" "Um..." "Okay, where do I let you out..." "Ha!" |

I heard from a BMW source last week that the new Z4 will have the new twin turbo 4L engine in it as well and that there are no definite plans for a ///M version yet.
This has suddenly made me realise that i should find myself a good M Z4 now... |

That's what I just did. Well, ordered back in May and took delivery in Sep. I like it tremendously the way it is and I'm fearful of what they'll do to the next one. BMW will only tame it and give it the normal automation and frills that I absolutely didn't want. I like raw and more of a singular purpose. I also would never want a car with a folding metal roof, and I'm no great fan of the twin turbo 6 (N54).

There is no way BMW is putting a 4.0L twin turbo in the Z4. He must have ment the 3.0L twin turbo (N54).

Maybe not for North American consumption. But for the rest of the world... 4cyl is very viable possibility.

Yip just confirmed again today, she said there will be a 4L twin turbo in the Z4. So the line up for SA looks like a 2.5, 3L, 3L Twin turbo and 4L twin turbo. No M model planned yet. |

If this is at all accurate, it sounds like it's turning out to be a heavy pig - if they're offering the 4L TT in the standard line Z. I hope not.

Makes me happy with owning the E85 Z4 if the new one is going to be a fat pig of a car.
Roadsters should be true to their heritage. Lightweight, great handling, and quick little cars. Not fat ass autobahn cruisers.

Obviously we're in tough times at the moment. Even BMW has cancelled projects and temporarily closed factories to limit production. Fuel prices are high and anything but consistent. It's always nice to have the performance king in your lineup, but why would they choose any motor that would drink like a 4L twin turbo?

I dont even know why this is a discussion. BMW doesnt have a 4L TT engine at the moment and they would not go out of their way to develop one to shove it in a low volume car like the Z. The only thing that comes close is the 4.4L TT V8 from the X6, another thing that has no reason to be in a Z.
Lastly, a 4L TT is retarded anyway. I doubt a non-M Z will push more than 350HP. Im guessing N54 will be the range topper for the first MY release. |
