There is a good reason they call it a "muffler".

if you want to make it louder w/o sounding like shit, consider cutting off the resonator in the mid/rear pipe that leads the muffler and replacing with a straight pipe(s).

If you remove the resonator, what's the change in sound like?

Rosie, I hope you are joking about the "backfire thing", but, as I think about it, you are probably just "baiting the forum", are you not?

Haha this reminds me of the day I took off an exhaust from my s2k and went out for the drive.
My bro crapped his pants when I gave him a ride.
It is so damn loud and obnoxious. Rice as hell to the finest.

every car's different. i haven't done it on my z but was contemplating it. put it this way. you can get louder sound by

a) removing resonator
b) replacing muffler
c) both

quietest to loudest in that order.

but after listening to both B and C, A is probably your best option. its cheapest in labor and parts. and if you don't like it, you can always go from there.

Dubbedown, thanks for the info and I do understand the sound principles. I was asking about the resonator as I would like a little more sound as long as it's not raspy. At what the going rate is for most Z specific mufflers, removing the resonator seemed like a low cost alternative. I'm hopeful someone has done this and can report on the results. Thanks again.

right, i wasn't trying to be patronizing. i was trying to get at the point that there are people here who spent good money on replacing just the muffler and even that was too loud. and since you're aware the muffler has more of an impact on sound than the resonator, taking out the resonator to me seems like the most logical and cost effective route.

and from my general experience with other cars, i remember my full-catback on my previous car was too loud. i was running aftermarket 2.5" cat with downpipe, straight pipe and free flow muffler. awesome performance since it let the turbo really breathe but the drone was killing me. ultimately, i kept the free flow pipe but put on the stock muffler. no real decrease in performance and sounded a bit louder than stock under load, at idle couldn't even tell i had anything under there.
