How many watts is too much?
Hey everyone, haven't seen a thread specific to this topic as far as custom audio systems go in our e70 x5s, but I'm getting ready to start diving in to the second stage of my custom audio system and I'm just wondering just how much our stock alternators can safely handle…
Currently I'm running about 1,200watts rms and a dsp, which draws close to nothing. My x5 seems to handle it no problem even in the winter with heat running, heated seats, and steering wheel. So now I'm wanting to run another 12ch amp/16 ch dsp so I can split up all my speakers on separate channels for the ultimate control over my system. Right now I'm calculating, if I fill every channel, I'd be at about 2,000watts rms and 21 processed channels. My alternator is the 220amp one. And I'd be pulling possibly as much as 150amp depending on how efficient my amps are, all amps are class D btw. So does anyone with more knowledge on the electrical system in our e70s know if I'm asking for issues pulling that much power or could it handle it? I'm just unsure how many amps are already being pulled by various accessories and modules

I'm in the mindset that, you're fine, and why you're fine is that peak draw is transient.
Bass notes will be the ones to cause the most current draw, and if you said 2000W RMS for the sub channel alone, I'd think you should beef up the battery for supplementary power. But it's 2000W RMS across all frequencies; you should be fine. |
