1-Series ancestor: Ford Lotus Cortina?

While all the sales literature and promotion crows about the 1-series lineage as descended from the 2002tii, I'm struck by how much it looks like a Cortina!

That extreme side crease on the flank debuted on the Cortina and really hasn't been seen since... until the bmw 1. Not a bad heritage really, the Lotus-Cortina pre-dated the tii by a solid decade and has a much earlier claim (with the alfa gtv) as one of the truly first compact sports sedans.
