I had a bike-2007 Triumph Daytona 675. I was looking for $7999, and got $7000 from a personal buyer...not a dealer. I will be selling a car too, but am waiting until the date to get my baby is closer before selling. I'd definitely try to sell to an individual as you will most always get more. Good luck.

2001 325i sold in one week

I sold my 2001 325i BMW in one week. I had alot of potential buyers saying they prefer the 2001 body style to the new body styles. I was glad for that. I sold it for 12,500. That will go to knock off the 135i loan.

Randy, this doesn't seem to be a great maket for selling your car. After trying unsuccessfully to sell it for nearly 3 weeks, I wound up trading my '03 Z4 for about 7% under KBB trade in value. As my state now charges the 6% sales tax on the difference between the new car and trade, it was pretty much a wash (CarMax offered the same price as the dealer) - but I was certainly hoping for more.

I would think with that low of miles, you wouldn't have that much of a problem. Maybe it's just the area you are in. I would try a Carmax if there is one near you. They aren't as bad as a dealer, they will just buy it outright. Check'em out.

So figure about 7% less then KBB trade-in value. Why even have the 3 levels of value. Trade-in value is the lowest, and 7% under that is bad. If I am forced to trade-in my car for 7% below the lowest value(trade-in value) then BMW better knock off $1k or more for the 135i.

i did a pass-through (private buyer/dealer trade as detailed here). i listed my car on autotrader and craigslist. i started off by getting a bid from carmax. they low-balled me which surprised me because i had received a good bid on a previous car two years earlier. i never even discussed trading via the dealer until i found my own buyer.

anyway, my details:

i listed at 24,900 (was personally willing to go down to 24,000)
carmax: 17,500
real buyer offered 23,000
with the pass-through, i netted 24,000 and my buyer got his price

took me about three weeks.

As far as trading in the car.

Example: If my car at dealers is selling used with the same mileage and condition for about $19,500. And KBB says trade-in value is $16,925, I should then expect BMW to offer about 7% less then the $16,925? Which would be about $15,740 ??? Is this close ???
Just trying to compare the hassle of selling myself, tax savings, and waiting HOW LONG for the 135i to come in. I only have 1 car to drive.

Main question: Would $15,740 be about right???

Jeff. I was simply relating my experience. YMMV!

You could always call them, tell them it's a 2hr drive, and ask for a ballpark over the phone before you waste everyone's time.

I sold a vehicle to them in 2003. They went off of "Good" condition in Kelly Blue Book. They gave me EXACTLY what it showed on KBB for good condition. I don't know if they still do this or not, but a good place to see how much you could get would be to go on KBB and see what it's worth.

Go to Edmunds.com and look at the True Market Value. Look at the trade in value and see what they say. It should be pretty close.

My dealer quoted me $10,200 for my 2005 PT Cruiser GT. KBB.com trade-in value for "Good" condition is only a couple hundred higher so I'm happy with that.

You are asking to much. High auction wholesale on your car is $20,000, the dealers wont offer you much more than this.

I checked it on Manhiems auction site
