DC Tax Question
Hi there.
I live in DC, but am purchasing my 1er in Maryland. I will either be trading my car to the dealer, carmax, or selling it privately. Do I get a tax credit on the difference between my car sale and the price of the new car? Or do I have to pay the full 6 percent for the new car? Thanks for the help. |

That is a good question! I've never heard of this but I want to know too! I'm in the same situation, and my 135i is on order from BMW of Silverspring (Tischer).

Can't say definitively about MD - I just got a new 135 in VA and sold the old car at Carmax (also in VA). No tax credit.
I did, however, just get a check from the dealer with an invoice listing it as a 1% DC Tax refund...not really sure why. |

The District should cut you a 1% tax credit for the difference as per the poster above. MD will hose you for the sales/excise tax difference coming into the state (bought my Accord in Richmond back in '04, paid 3% tax, had to fork over the difference titling it here in '06). I think that if you purchase here in MD, then you'll have to pay 6% no matter what since that's a sales tax on goods purchased. Check with the stealership though - that should be a scenario they have everyday I would think.
