Clunk from rear on braking?
What is causing the clunking sound from the rear when you brake (with a sharp press on the brakes)?
Anyone else get this? I also notice a slight rattle from the transmission when coming off the clutch quickly and engaging a gear while the car is in motion. But I think this is normal as I remember my '01 MX5 doing this. (only audible when no AC is on and windows up). |

Kris, I find that reassuring that I'm not the only one. I initially thought it could be the pads moving in the caliper, but it doesnt sound like it. It really sounds like something to do with the rear suspension.

Hi guys, I had this too. Had a friend get their head near the rear wheel to find the source, it's the pads moving and hitting the caliper. The noise is amplified in you garage, if you brake in reverse and the move forward and brake they will shift back and forwards (the pads) and smack into the surrounding caliper metal.

Thanks Swift. I did a test last night also...I again suspected it was the pads shifting around because I noticed as you said above it only happens in one direction once.

Kris, yes I am pretty sure it is the pads that are moving around causing the clunking. Pretty normal. Or as we say on the Lotus forum whenever a strange noise is heard in our poorly insulated cars 'TADTS'...They All Do That Sir. (usually the reply you get from a dealer).

I have a cure for your problems guys because i don't seem to have this problem. Get yourself aftermarket front pads and don't use the factory backing plate. You will hear so much clunking noise that suddenly it's impossible to hear the rear ones. Lol

Common noise.
Its comes from the tank's. The thing that makes this noise is the "tankmeter" that meassures your fuel. You wont notice the noise when your tank is 3/4 to 4/4 filled up.

i also heard this clunking noise from my rear right when braking at slow speeds. i'm positive it's brake related because when i hold the handbrake, i can feel it at the handbrake lever.... any fix to this clunking? should i worry about it? thanks.

As already said it is the 'tankmeter' or 'fuelmeter'. Mine was loose so the fuel would knock the meter and would produce the clunck sound. It will not make the noise if you fill all the way up.
Hope that helps shawn |
