Resonators with Performance Exhaust...
The performance exhaust has no real straight piping but I'm getting some drone. Has anyone been able to slap a resonator into the system?

You will find that as the new pipes start to carbon up on the inside the drone will be lesser..
Took mine about 1000km's to start sounding awesome.. |

I haven't noticed much change in the sound of the performance exhause over time, especially with respect to drone. The overall sound level seems to have increased slightly with breakin. I take it that you installed the complete performance exhaust. If you have the resonator, you might want to reinstall it. If not, you can probably pick up one. I have the complete stock exhaust (from the cut for the resonator eliminator back) with only a couple hundred miles on it and could put it up for sale if anyone is interested.

I have the performance exhaust on now and I admit there is a drone, but it is really slight, nothing to really whine about (imho). If you don't like it just downshift to 3rd or 2nd. It might burn gas, but man that sound is intoxicating!!! I had some guy in a
BMW 545i pull up next to me asking about the 1er after hearing it sing I love the car twice as much now with the performance exhaust and will find it harder to leave it alone.

people do complain about the drone of the PP exhaust. If have heard that form other users to. And yes, it is not a free flowing exhaust. In fact, is the the stock, with more noice. I have driven in a 135i with the - very expensive- Recaro seats. Very nice looking, o yes, beautiful!! But, the seats are TO HIGH. I could not adjust a nice sitting position, and tried over and over again. The stock seats are much. much better!
So for me, like the PP exhaust, yet another PP product that is looking great, but in fact, is not so good... |

I have the BMW Performance exhaust as my only exhaust mod and I absolutely love it. It is loud when I want it to be and soft when I need it to be. If there is any drone (not even sure I'd call the resonating sounds on highway drone), it does not bother me at all. --MW

Highway and start up drone... those are the killers for me. The start-up drone is crazy loud on a cold day and makes our entire apartment building vibrate. For long road trips, the highway drone gets a bit annoying. For downtown driving and backroad driving it's amazing, no doubt. But for every day, hmm. I don't think I can fit a resonator in there that would dampen the sound enough. Not a large enough straight-piped section

I have the stock exhaust with only the golf tee mod performed and I can honestly say that when I start it up in the garage (with the door open!) the drone is loud enough to give me the beginnings of a headache. When it warms up though it's fine.
So I can see where the Perf exhaust would do this even worse. I think it's more of the actual frequency of the drone than the loudness of it perhaps.

Look at the pictures on the above linked post and you'll see that the original exhaust has a resonator. Go back to the exhaust installer and see if they can replace the performance exhaust Y-pipe with the original parts. This might be what you are looking for.

sorry if this has been asked before but could we just use the 128i perf exhaust on the 135? I think that one leaves the resonator.

maybe I drive faster or generally use a different gear on the highway... I dont have drone in day to day driving. I make frequent ~250-300mi trips.. and never even noticed it.
As for startup on cold days, thats a whole diff story. Its loud... |
