Is there something wrong with my fuel tank?
The past two times I was refueling my pump prematurely stopped. Both around the same at (around 7-8 gallons)
What is going on? should I go to the service and get this checked? Last edited by Eazy-e; 07-05-2012 at 01:02 PM.. |

This happens to me sometimes too. My pet theory is that there is a sharp bend very close to the nozzle that causes false "full tank" readings.

This same thing has happened to me two or three times, but only during the summer when it is hot outside. I suspect some kind of a vapour/pressure lock in the tank, fuel filler area.

I find that no matter what the angle or depth of the nozzle, I can't fill the tank at full pressure. I have to back off a bit. Even so, I've spilled a bit when the back pressure at full doesn't shut off the nozzle fast enough.
Just have to exercise more care. Still, it's a PITA (pain in the a$$).

This happened to me once. I let the it get down well below 1/4 tank (about 18 miles to empty) and the pump kept shutting off as I tried to fill. It was odd, but it only happened that one time.

Thats really funny. I took my car down to well below 5 miles to empty and filled it. Ive never had this problem. Guess its something to look out for.

It has happen to me on a couple of occasions.
Both times happen at the same gas station when I used the same pump. There appeared to be a problem with the dispenser's nozzle's automatic shutoff sensing port near the end of the spout. Either the sensing port was faulty or the spout had been straighten. As long as the flow rate was slow, it worked. But increase the flow rate, and it would shutoff. |

This probably has more to do with the gas station you're filling up at than the car itself. If the pump has one of those bellows that covers the fuel filler hole, it will give problems every time. Also, certain pumps are more touchy than others. I've had this happen a few times on road trips, but I never have any problem with the pumps while I'm around home.

I had the opposite happen a few weeks after my car arrived. I was filling up and the auto-shutoff didn't stop... result was a gallon or two on the side and underneath the car. I wasn't very happy about that.

I learned real quick you cannot top off this car or try to round it up to ANYTHING
when the pump shuts off it really means business. |

This has happened to me several times since I got the car in July. I finally decided to take it to the dealer this month and they replaced the fuel tank ventilation valve; BUT I still had it reject gas this week. BTW I never let the gas drop below quarter tank or about 40 miles remaining.

I've found that if I fill the tank at 3/4 pressure for the first 3-5 gallons I can then use full pressure. My friend had the same problem on his e92 335i, and supposedly the dealer told him it had something to do with heat and a valve at the top of the gas tank. They just told him to fill slowly for the first few gallons, and it's been working for me.

(Old thread, but was searching for the topic...)
I've been having this problem more and more. I never had the problem until recently, now going to my usual gas station (same pump even), I have to fill slowly. Today when out of town I tried to fill up and couldn't put any gas in the car. The tank was half full, I had just driven 160+ miles, and it was hot out. I tried to squeeze the pump handle as little as possible (to make the flow as slow as possible), but it always shut off. After shutoff occurred 10+ times and about $2.xx in gas, I gave up. Couldn't even get 1 gallon in. Filled up later at another gas station, no problems. |

I've encountered this issue once, I tried the next pump only for it to happen again. Drove to another station and filled up with no problem. Haven't had any issue since.
