How long did it take you to get through break in?
Still anxiously awaiting my 1er, and I know once it gets here, it's going to be very hard to resist mashing the fun pedal. I'm almost thinking of taking a road trip the week after I get it just to get it over with.
So how long did it take you all to get through break in? Did you take it slow or did you burn right through it? Was it as agonizing as I'm thinking it will be? |

picked up my car yesterday, have about 200 miles on it now. While I really want to just hammer the thing, I'm honestly not having that much of a problem. I'll admit to a couple of trips over 4500rpm (not over 5k, though) and one quick full throttle pull just get get it out of my system, but the car is so quick and so torquey that just using 50-60% gas and shifting at 3500 or so is still a shitload of fun.
Even while driving "break-in style", I'm still having to slow down more often than not to keep it to a reasonable speed. Once the break-in is over, I'm probably going to end up in jail. |

What's really wonderful is that after the "break-in", this engine gets smoother and smoother with every additional mile. For those members that are just starting out, if you think it is sweet right after break-in, just wait until you feel how silky and buttery smooth this engine gets after about 5K miles.

i've had my car 11 days now, and have 1100km on the clock (approx 700 miles)... have revved it to 4500rpm gently a few times now. There are many more aspects of the car to enjoy than the acceleration, so the wait hasn't been too bad so far.
I was just going to wait to 2000km (1250 miles) before i open her up fully... should i be waiting longer? After reading some of the comments here, maybe i'll just limit my self to 5000rpm between the 2000km-3000km range? |

Simple process
1) Break-in of 250 miles per cylinder (1500 miles for the 1) 2) No more than 50% acceleration and no higher than 4000rpm for first 500 miles 3) No more than 75% acceleration and no higher than 5000rpm for next 500 miles 4) For remaining 500 miles, still be gentle, but you should punch it here or there just so the engine starts getting used to things. If you really want to be thorough, you can pay for an early oil change to ensure you clean out anything in the oil from the break-in. I was taught that process a long time ago, and I have know many that follow that rule and have not had engine problems. I have had plenty of other car problems, but never an engine problem. If you wish to go even longer than that, no worries, but I wouldn't do less.

How can it possibly take so long to break in a car that's so addicting to drive?
I'm at 1,300 miles in about a week. None of it (well, almost none of it) above 4,500 RPM. It's just plain fun...get behind the d@mn wheel!!!

As for time to break in, mine took a while, since I use it as my "nice" car, and have a commuter car to go to work. So after 5 months, I am only at 2,777. It took me about 3 months to break it in fully.

I believe it took me 8 days to hit the magical 1,200 mile mark during ED. We didn't drive every day since we usually got to a city and parked for a day or so.
During the break-in, I behaved, shifting before 4000 RPMs and keeping it around 100MPH. But by mile 1,202 I was doing somewhere in the 120's, by 1,250 miles it was to the 130's and the next day in the 1,400's I was north of 140. Most of that was limited by traffic and weather...Boy those autobahn sure were nice...

I'm on three weeks, about 700miles, been pretty nice to her (accept still working on perfect shifts, man you barely have to move your foot off the accelerator; I'm used to manuals you have to completely take your foot off) anyway sorry. Only gotten up to 4k rpm a few times gently, 85 has been my top speed (unsustained). I'm finding it easy to stay within the parameters and still have a great time driving! She does beg to be driven harder though. I agree that with every mile the car is smoother. Will definitely do an early oil change!

Living in Germany I would set off at 9pm at night and just drive in any given direction. Drive for about 30/45 mins get lost I mean lost. Then fire up the GPS and hit home. Took me a little over two weeks!
