Exhaust Pop at cold start

Over the past few weeks (before this last spur of 90 degree days) I noticed a load POP coming from my exhaust just as I would release the throttle to shift. It would happen no more than 3 times after cold start, at which time I suspect some warmer air was pushing through. I'm NOT referring the the gargle on throttle release, this is a loud POP, sounds very much like backfiring. The engine is cold, and I'm often still in my neighborhood so acceleration is very slow and conservative, we're talking shift to 2nd around 2,500.

Any thoughts?
