Engine Malfunction: Reduced Power Mode
So I was driving on 280, enjoying the car, when BLAM: The Engine Malfunction Light came on.
So, I dropped the car to my wife's place of work so she could take it to the dealership. She told me that the light did not come on during her journey to the dealership. The car is now at the dealership. DO you guys think its another HPFP or something else? Any advice would help. I just don't want BMW to say that it was just a "random" check light which could actually be something major! Last edited by b2nvs2001; 05-06-2009 at 09:34 AM.. |

If it's something major they will find it. The N54 is known to sometimes throw Limp mode when there is nothing really wrong. I wouldn't worry about it either way. If it's something they will fix it, if it's not, then you will probably never see another CEL.
Plus, could be something like bad gas..

But the bigger question is why your "wifes place" is not the same as your place?!?! Place of work maybe? |

Yes, hopefully your place of work.
I think you will get strong concurrence that it is the HPFP. Reduced power is the car's computer going into "Failsafe Mode", and the failure of the HPFP is the most prevalent reason.

If it's the HPFP you will notice poor performance (stuttering, stalling, shaking, etc) in addition to just the light on the dash.

There are no mods to the car but I have noticed on occasion that after I drive the car hard for a bit, the next consecutive time I try to do so, it does not have as much oomph. Also, I drove the car hard the day before the light came on and I smelt a little burning. However, I had never driven the car as hard as I did that day (remember Dangerlucas ). And actually just before teh light came on I was driving the car pretty hard. The thing is, I was certainly not driving the car wrecklessly and ripping the car to shreds as some people do! I was just driving a little more forcefully than I usually do. But oh well, I guess I will wait and see. Furthermore, when limp mode came on, I actually didn't feel any difference between that mode and stock - lol. I could still feel the turbos spooling up. Should you be able to tell? |

I had limp mode happen on my 135i a bout 4 weeks ago, its was just after I had filled up with a full tank of gas and was driving down the road. I was on a straight doing about 30mph and gunned it and boom the car started coughing and the red warning triangle came on.
I was worried I had gotton a bad tank of gas so I pulled over and hit the SOS button to ask them what to do. Unfortunately it was a Sunday (don't break down on a Sunday) and they said all they could do was tow the car to the nearest dealership and drive me home. I had a job interview at 9am the next day so that was not going to help me, after some heated debate they relented that they could drive me to the nearest car rental place which was Newark airport (40m away) but I would have to rent a car on my own dime. I told them to take a hike because that would cost me a fortune and there would be no way for me to get the car back there. I drove home with the car sounding like it was running on 3 cylinders, looked up limp mode on the internet and figured I could just unplug the battery for 20 mins. This worked and limp mode went away, but the car was not 100%. Not as bad as before but with a slight hestitation on acceleration. I drove to my inerview the next day fine and then took the car straight to the garage. They said that one injector was malfunctioning which they replaced and the car has been fine since. |

True, that could be the case. I filled up just before I started driving. BUt I usually am pretty cautious about clicking the gas cap more than 5 times.
Also, this wasn't a true limp mode. If was the half engine yellow icon with idrive showing engine malfunction, reduced power mode. Apperently this is different from the real limp! |
