changing the steering wheel trim

After searching on this forum I saw a few ppl that changed the whole steering wheel but apparently no one kept the wheel while only changing the trim insert. My car is a 128i with the sport steering wheel - the one with the aluminum-like plastic trim. What I'd like to do is swap out that trim and replace it with a basic alcantara or M multifunction trim. Can it be done and will it fit perfectly?

The basic alcantara trim is 55$ on tischer so it's a cheap mod too http://www.trademotion.com/partlocat...catalogid=4462 .
