Mauled my Z (long)
Hello all,
After the past few days, I'm glad that I can be here to tell this story. Here it goes. All started this past Memorial Day weekend. My good friend Simon followed me home from school in his E36 M3 - there are several great mountain drives around my home in VA. We had decided to go on a drive to Mt. Rogers (highest point in VA) Sunday morning. All was well and good. Until... Well...okay...I ran off the road. But... Not what you think. I'll admit, we were having fun, but not driving dangerously nor on or near the threshold of our abilities. It all happened so quickly though. There was a left hander - late apex, slight drop in elevation. Oh, and what is ALL OVER THE ROAD just at the top of the curve? Gravel. Dammit. I was in front of Simon and hit it first. My right rear wheel slipped off the road and onto the non-existent shoulder - merely a mushy concoction of dead leaves and mud. This was about to get real. I panicked and braked...on top of the DSC light going crazy. The weight shifted and before I could blink I was moving off the road pretty quickly. Looking ahead, all I saw was an overgrown field. Awesome. I'll just ride it out in the tall grass. Wrong. Next thing I know, the passenger side abruptly drops and the whole car in general begins to aim downward. Creek. Shit. Luckily I was still carrying enough speed to strike the far bank with the bottom of my bumper/radiator. Airbag pops and scares the hell out of me. I realized that this bank is almost solid rock. At that point I just rode it out into the grass on the other side of the creek. Had enough composure after all this to pull the parking brake, grab my cell phone, sunglasses, and wallet and walked out of the car. Luckily, there was a house nearby who had a phone (no cell signal). Called the police. No citation. The family who lived in aforementioned "home" is another story altogether. First accident and it was damn scary. The car is absolutely mangled, especially the front right suspension. Shock tore right through the mount and the wheel might as well have been sitting in the passenger seat as it was pushed so far back. Just got the "preliminary" estimate today - 17 grand. They're still tearing it apart, was told to expect more than 20 grand. What say you? Totaled? Thanks all! -Zach

Of course these pics are sans busted body parts. And I'm surprised my front wheel looks that good...last time I saw it it was about a foot and a half to the rear of its current position.

Dinan parts? I'm not sure how the insurance company feels about me making off with them, although I'll check into it. Could cut you quite a deal as long as they're in good shape.
DSC was on. |

What a shame man. Nice looking car. It is definitely totaled. You should be able to pick up a 06/07 M for a good price. Glad you walked away from it!

You drive "spiritedly" with DSC on? Man, I could never do that!
Glad you are okay, too bad about the car, I hate gravel on roads... almost put my motorcycle down on some. Luckily for me though I was just starting around a corner from a stop and spun a 180...

Car is totaled officially now. The insurance company is not willing to compensate for the Dinan parts so I will be removing them and hopefully they'll posted on here within the next week!
Picking up an '07 E92 335 Saturday. I'm excited, although it's no Z. Thanks again everyone for the well wishes. I'm gonna miss this place! -Zach |
