6 Speed Shifter / Questions / Concerns

Hey guys... anyone else feel like the 1-2 shift is notchy/sloppy... and just plain 'slow' if you want to throw a fast shift... it won't let you?

I can 'slam' 2-3 no problem... 3-4 no problem... but 1-2... It's like I have to wait an extra second before I can release the clutch... or the trans does not accept the 'throw'?

Obviously it's fine driving around town.. this is only in a 'drag race' type shift environment... not in even normal spirited driving.

Does a short throw shifter cure this?

I have the AA ssk and the shifting is a little smoother. as long as you keep the stock shifter or even the zcp shifter you should be ok. i currently have the performance shift knob and need a little more practice with my 1-2 shift. i could hit the 1-2 shift easily with the stock shift knob. now with the performance shift knob i miss shift at times because my hand will slip off the shifter if i shift too fast, gets frustrating. but the ssk helped a lot, so give it a try

There's a thread about crunching the gears between 1st and 2d. I don't have that problem and can shift as quickly 1-2 as I can any other gear. I added the UUC SSK a few hundred miles ago. It speeds the shift only a little due to the shorter throw. I don't think it'll fix a car that's slow to shift.

If you try to rush it does it grind? If so, then you may have the problem discussed in the other thread.

Forget about fast shifting; just the lowsy feel of the 1-2 shift in normal driving is a letdown of an otherwise great driving experience. And yes, I have no doubt I'd grind gears if I try a quick 1-2 shift the way it is now.

I asked on another thread what the hell happened there. It must be a design problem, a manufacturing defect on that gate, a bad synchro... it HAS to be something, and I'd like to know what. I'm hoping it'll get better with miles, at least to an acceptable degree, but it might take a looooong time. Redline MTL oil made a big difference on my new Honda Accord 6MT notchy feeling, but it was mostly when cold. This car feels bad ALL THE TIME. All other gear changes are perfectly acceptable to me, including downshifting to 2nd. For some reason, it's just the 1-2 shift. And no, I'm not remotely interested on a SSK, especially with the additional noise reported.

I'm afraid we'll never know the answer until somebody's tranny is opened up. Not a huge deal, but disappointing nonetheless. Good evening gang.

Thanks guys... and yeah... I actually figured it out... much like that thread... (and doing a lot of trial and error)... you have to just 'wait' an extra tenth of a second before pulling from 1 to 2. In my back to back testing... what I realized it to be... is from 1 to 2... you can pull the gearshift, back towards 2nd gear before the clutch has 'fully' engaged to the floor and it just hasn't had the time to disengage fully, allowing 2nd gear to be 'prepared' for the shift.

I now... shift at 8,400 with no problems... just making sure my left foot is ahead of my right hand. Which is 'somewhat' BS... because you can pound 2 to the 3 or 3 to 4 as FAST as you want... just a delay slightly built into this unit for the 1-2 throw... I'm sure things are spinning very fast in there.

Thanks again for the thread referral as well... confirms most everything.

Check your invoices for the 1200 mile service. I bet they forgot to change your tranny oil. Happened to me and when I took her in at 7000 miles it changed the 1st to 2nd feel dramatically. The break-in oil is very heavy, they told me. I don't believe much from them, but I tell you the difference is big.
