Why is the nav screen fixed now instead of flip up?

I just bought a 125i... oh sorry! hello everyone stoked with the new purchase, have been eagerly reading threads while i wait for delivery ...

Anyway, why have they changed from the flip up to a fixed monitor? I'd MUCH rather a flip up option so the screen can be hidden when not in use.

Just wondering if anyone knows the logic behind changing to a fixed screen?

Cheers,
Hugh.

Hehe, well thanks for the welcome

I woke up on Saturday morning 95% set on buying an Audi S3 manual 3 door. Anyway went and checked one out, got the dealer to find the model with specs I was looking for, and talked the guy down on price. They couldn't quite make the price i was looking for, was talking to my boss (as he's a car lover too and will be financing the vehicle through work), and he recommended i go see the sales person he buys all his beemers from in Artarmon.

I walked into the showroom thinking there was NOTHING in the BMW range that would interest me, underpowered and overpriced..?

Anyway long story short, i made the mistake of test driving the 125i in manual. Not as quick as an S3, but for some reason i was grinning like an idiot for about an hour after driving it, whereas the S3 just didn't bring on that kind of reaction.

That said i was still pretty keen on the S3, decided I'd sleep on it. Went home, and my mind just kept returning to the 125i, the handling and feel of the thing, the engine note, MY GOD! And the way the arse moves when driving in the wet

Next day i pulled the trigger, there was only 1 manual 125i available in Sydney (according to the sales person), which was the demonstrator i drove, 480km on the clock. The other option was to build one up, which was looking likely, however with a delivery time of over 3 months, i figured i couldn't wait.. the one i was building up was lower spec, the demo had all the bells and whistles... Luckily they were motived to sell and i got a killer deal.

So here I am researching mods and parts, and trying to find out more about the car.

Pretty excited, should be picking it up Friday arvo, will have to take a drive up to the Blue Mountains, or maybe to the Gong on Sunday morning.

Nice one! I did the exact same thing, except ended up with the 135. I bought a new one off the forecoart as it was speced out OK and I have no patients!
My first day was up to Newcastle via Hunter valley; day 2 was Bathurst via Bells Line of Road; happy days!!

Nah, not Sylvania.
It's got the M pack, 18 inch wheels, sunroof and business nav system.

Hey congrats!! You'll love the beast. I know exactly how you feel about the smile and that feeling when you drive it.

I was also as impatient as you! Went all the way to Newcastle to pick up my ex. demo =)

If you’re heading down the gong make sure you take Lawrence Hargrave Drive along the Sea Cliff Bridge

You’ll have to share pics!

Enjoy!

Well done Janus.

I also drove an Audi before signing up for the 125. It was an A3 Quattro (not the S3), had a bit of go, but was very sterile compared to the BMW.

Welcome! And a great choice by the way...

As for your question! I believe the main reason for the change was because the Pro Nav has been upgraded to the new iDrive. Which requires a larger, higher resolution screen. It's 1000x better than the old iDrive, just without the flip up screen. You have a hard drive based Nav instead of DVD (which is much faster), you can download music to it, play DVD's etc etc.

I think the Business Nav still uses the flip up screen?

hey, well I've got the business nav and it's the fixed screen, so i guess it was just easier for them to produce both using the same housing and just put the smaller screen in the business package. Anyway it's still nice.

Was just toying with the idea of trying to get a flip up one (a guy in the USA's selling a flip up screen with housing) and installing it, but i think that might be going a bit far. I don't think the business one has a hard drive or anything like that.

Am pretty happy it's just got a USB port instead of dedicated ipod doc so there are some options there, was thinking i can just buy a cheap 16gb usb key from officeworks and put all my music on it then just plug it in and i've got all my tunes in the car anyway.

Anyone else done this?

Also I've got a blackberry, anyone know if you plug it in via the USB port if you can access the music on the blackberry in the car (i've got a 16gb card in the blackberry already so would save me buying a new one)? Also if you plug your blackberry in via usb to keep a charge does it still work via bluetooth?

Anyway, can't wait to pick up the car, so excited, i'm useless at work at the moment

I'm with you on the "useless at work at the moment", Janus. I'm exactly the same. I'm due to pick my 135 up from Chatswood on Thursday or Friday.

At least I've had the distraction of driving their 335 'vert until I pick up. Without that, I think I'd just stay at home and sulk.

Happy days

To save you the search, you can use a flash drive. I use an 8GB one myself and it works a treat nestled under the arm-rest.

Just remember you will need to format it in FAT32, not NTFS which is more common now.

Interesting I was also looking at the S3 initially and experience the same euphoria and disturbing manic grin after driving a 135i coupe. Ordered it the same day of the test-drive.

ah ok, I will remember that.

And as far as the filing goes, do you have to have all the files in the top directory, or can i copy my entire music collection onto a flash drive (formatted to FAT32 as stated) with Folders and Sub Folders?

USB Flash drives are always pre-formatted to FAT32.

Nah! Just had the call. Mine won't be ready to pick up until Saturday morning.

While I'm a long-termer, the loan car is because I pre-traded my old car to lock in the deal 3 months ago. Which has been a pain to deal with (and they know that). And, my car was due to be ready mid last week, so it's late. The loaner's actually been a good thing. In addition to having something REALLY nice to drive, it'll allow me to compare living with a 335 compared to the 135, which was one of the choices I made in picking the 135.

I'll be interested to see if I get any freebies. Lots of folks do. If I don't, I won't be too disappointed - I got a great deal, and with what I saved, I won't be buying a picnic hamper. Not that there's anything wrong with a picnic hamper - we just dont' need another one.

On the other hand, if they want to throw in performance pedals, SSK, or similar, I won't be writing a letter of complaint.

Mm, i'm not sure how long the funds will take to clear, we're transferring them tomorrow, it's a business account to the transfer is meant to be almost instantaneous, though I'm still not sure if they'll see them by Friday.

Wish i could get my hands on the car handbook for some light reading before i pick it up.

I am sure the dealer wont mind lending you a book out of a demonstrator or even your own 125i handbook.. Doesnt hurt to ask..

I brought a $50 16Gb Lexar USB ... load 14Gb of songs to it. It is taking fringing forever to load all the song titles ... well forever means 2-3 minutes

But if you have a playlist. It will come up quicker.

Someone in the forum suggested to have the USB sectioned in to 26 folders. I have 27 (one with 0-9, and one each from A to Z). Then I use the folder which has already sorted out in iTune - some are in Chinese btw. Then I organise it according to A - Z.

It is a cheap option. I imagine though iPod is quicker.

iPod integration is brilliant, especially if you use iTunes to organise your music. It's easy to navigate through artist/album/title/genre or playlists ... and doesn't take forever to load.
