The Ideal Intake

Greetings everyone from M3post.

I am the R&D rep for a fully performance project that will be dedicated on improving and providing the best performance products for European automobiles.

Needless to say the M3 is at the top of our list. We are currently in the R&D phase of a performance intake for this vehicle.

Since no one knows more about this car than the actual enthusiasts who drive it, we would like to ask YOU what you believe the ideal intake for the M3 would consist of as far as pricing, materials used, etc...

In the end, we will take all your feedback into account when we start the development phase of what we promise to be the best induction system for the BMW M3.

I hope to hear from as many of you as possible. And I thank you for allowing us to be a part of this community.

You've got one hell of a project ahead of you - the stock intake is very good on this vehicle:

Hopefully - this isn't another sheet metal heat shield claiming 40hp gains.

Perhaps time would be better spent on producing some brake cooling ducts for the M3?

+1000

and maybe do something about the steering wheel fluid which overheats (during heavy track work) and gets spilled all over the engine bay

Indeed it is very well designed. However, for starters, the materials can be improved. Which leads us to answer your second question.
We specialty is Carbon Fiber of the highest quality, with cutting edge manufacturing processes. Guaranteed to be on par with the one used in Formula 1 racing.
Most, if not all, companies out there use Carbon Fiber. But their manufacturing process reduces the advantages of having Carbon Fiber to be on par with mere fiberglass.

As of right now, the preliminary design focuses on IMPROVING the OEM system, in any way possible, including the plenum.

Many thanks Tom. This is exactly the type of thing we are looking to hear from all of you.

Our focus on this thread is for the induction system. But this is an EXCELLENT suggestion. PM me your thoughts on this please.

I know Dinan has a larger tube from the filter to the plenum.

Also, a heat shield for the powersteering pump (which is next to the headers) would really be nice, like gr8000 said. It's a big problem for anyone who drives the car hard. The fluid boils over and shoots out the top all over the engine bay. Or maybe a cooling duct directed at the resevior?

Let me get this straight... You are swapping out parts designed by some of the top engineers in the world because some guys sponsored by a company told you it's "better??" But when you ask the same guy about tracking, "oh no, I have a kid now" or "I just detailed my car." or "i just got new tires."

Awesome guys! Really appreciate all this. What do you feel is lacking from what's already out there? What are your thoughts on the costs for the M3 intakes currently out in the market?

All the things you have posted so far are very helpful and useful. Keep it coming!

I'd be ok if AT LEAST it can maintain stock performance while adding a little style to the engine bay.

I totally agree with Tom. The stock intake is perfect all you need is a aftermarket filter not much room for improvement BMW did it already Nurburing certified.

Well I don't know much about the different intake options other than the Gruppe M but I think that one is extremely overpriced IMO.

you could probably make a power steering cooler pretty easily with some over the counter parts..maybe a DIY project I can do and share with the forum one of these days

If you could just widen most of the intake paths (including the one going into the engine) combined with a nice quality high-flow reusable oiled filter would be nice.

Maybe have two versions, one with "scoops" and one without so people that already have the scoops can still buy the intake.

As far as materials, whatever is cost-effective but durable. Not cheap CF that will peel/crack/yellow

I suggested to RPI, come up with a CF hood scoop. Something low profile. I asked them about blocking this hole when I installed my RPI scoops. They claim it doesnt matter if you block the hood grill hole. The dyno results don't change. It is the classic "hole in the bucket" theory. What if you could turn the hood grill into a CF scoop. Add more air to the bucket through the hole. It is your turn to ponder the hood scoop idea.

I would not be interested in spending money on anything that does not improve performance. Real HP gains are the price of entry. After that, any well done CF is nice touch to improve the look of the otherwise all business engine bay. Cost wise, you have to keep it below a grand. The dollar/HP ratio must be in line with other mods. You are not just competing with other intakes, you are competing for discretionary mod dollars with exhaust, pulley, software and other exterior appearance parts. Good luck.
