Re-Oiling a Mact Schnell Air Filter

I just ordered a Mact Schnell Air Filter. I understand that it comes pre-oiled.

1) How many miles should I wait to wash and re-oil the filter?

2) Where can I buy a re-oiling kit and what is the general cleaning process?

3) Can I wash and re-oil at night and expect to reinstall the filter the next morning?

4) How many miles can I expect to get out of the lifetime of this filter?

I'll be re-oiling my MS filter every 10k miles. If you buy a K&N recharging kit, it has the instructions on there. Clean the MS filter as if it's a K&N filter.

1. 10k miles or when dirty

2. K&N Recharge Kit at Pepboys or most auto stores

3. You have to let the filter air dry (do not blow-dry), so if you live in hot climate like Texas then I'm sure overnight will be fine

4. K&N has a million mile warranty, not sure about Schnells expected life. I would make an educated guess saying enough to outlast the car

I don't understand why MS would release a performance air filter without offering a recharging kit???

Those are good instructions for the aFe kit. The aFe filter includes a recharge kit for you so no need to purchase the K&N Recharge kit. If you run out of fluid, we also offer replacement aFe recharge kits for the future.

Even 10K is a bit premature, 15K is recommended - depending on road conditions. It's recommend to shake the dirt out every 5K and clean/reoil every 15K and any cleaning kit can be used.

The only difference with the aFe cleaner is that the oil is vegetable-based (enviromental friendly), but any cleaning kit will do.

I would recommend inspecting the aFe to make sure it is sealed correctly. aFe uses a very soft polyurethane on the lid that distorts when pressure is put on it - allowing air to pass by unfiltered.

This is the primary cause of the "fluttering" sound people have reported in the past.

I plan on getting the K&N recharge kit once I'm ready to clean it. I take the cleaning thing a bit too seriously since I usually do it every 5k miles.

You'd be surprised how much dirt and stuff gets trapped in the air filter during that short amount of time....

I've stated this before, and I will state it again. Please everyone stop perpetrating this re-oiling every 5k to 15k. You guys are wasting your time and money unless you drive your cars through the Arizona desert or some other dusty conditions. Here are the quotes from the K&N site. The filter is meant to work best WITH SOME DIRT IN IT:

4. How often do I need to clean my K&N air filter?

If you have not experienced a decrease in mileage or engine performance, chances are your filter is fine and does not yet need cleaning. To be more specific, the filter does not require cleaning if you can still see the wire screen on the entire air filter regardless of how dirty it may appear. When the screen is no longer visible some place on the filter, it is time to clean it. When used in normal paved road, street or highway conditions, our replacement air filters that fit in the factory air box should require cleaning every 50,000 miles and our large conical filters on an intake system should require cleaning every 100,000 miles. When used in dusty or off-road environments, our filters will require cleaning more often. We recommend that you visually inspect your filter once every 25,000 miles to determine if the screen is still visible.
