Those with idle valve replace, please state your mileage
Please state mileage at the beginning of your post. Then make any other comments about your experience (if you want ).
My questions related to this issue are a few, if somebody cares to comment: 1- Is this something that might happen, or will happen with enough miles? Does anybody know EXACTLY what part of the valve is failing? Is it something that can be prevented by removing those parts and look for debris before they fail? 2- Does it get to a point it's not safe to use the car anymore? Having to wait days or weeks for the stupid valve is retarded IMO, especially when it's a well known issue. 3- Does anybody have a VIN range of potentially affected cars? If I remember correctly, the TSB (or whatever BMW calls it) didn't have that info. 4- Is the new valve being replaced a REDESIGNED one, or the same potentially flawed valve? Thank you for your help gang. |

I've read that link before, by the way, but that was out of the book. He had never seen one up to that point to throw his $0.02. Also wonder what exactly that valve does. It doesn't make sense that an 'idle' valve has any effect after the butterflies open, but the 'limp' mode (reduced performance) implies otherwise. If it was only idle related, car would idle bad, but run fine above idle, no? I started this thread to have a better idea when I might see this problem. So far all cases I've learned about happened above 10K miles, which I might never see before warranty expires. But that's only a few. Tired attaching a poll after the fact, but couldn't do it. Oh well. Take care. Last edited by JCtx; 09-03-2009 at 09:42 PM.. |

To me it means BMW hasn't fixed the darn problem, and are just throwing another potentially bad valve in. That's why I hope my car craps out when all those old valves are gone .
Thank you for your replies folks. I still think the failure rate is fairly low, but it's hard to tell. Just hope the car is drivable (6MT here) if it happens, as over 90% of its use is on trips. Take care. |

My engine sputtered on start up and then the dash turns into a christmas tree with all the warning. It ran fine, afterit started but the warning stayed for a while, but did go away after a few days. BUT, it was stored when the dealer scanned it.

Mine hit me on 25 June 09 when the car was exactly 12 months old with 22,100km on it. The dealer replaced the idle valve and the problem was fixed (fingers crossed). At present my M3 is 17 months old with 27,500km.

If this goes bad, anyone know if they can detect a tune and then void coverage?

Just had mine done at 13.5k miles. Only symptoms were occasional choppy throttle response and decreased power light.

Took my car for a 1K-trip a few days ago, and was afraid the stupid valve would fail when firing up the car at 14º in the morning, but fired up perfectly (whew!). Fuel mileage was bad enough at 17+ mpg; imagine with 'increased emissions'? But man, what a treat is to drive this car at high speeds; well worth the mileage penalty . |

Hey JC,
It went away upon restart, but would appear again shortly. I only got two lights when it would happen: Reduced engine power and DSC malfunction. Hope that helps .

6k miles
Mine went out right at 6k miles. Over a 2 week period, went from difficult cold start, to start in reduced-power mode with a plethora of warning lights on (brake, EDC, emission, engine, etc). Initially I could get it to restart in full power with only "check engine" light on AFTER it warmed up for ~5 min. But then later, a total crap out... Driving home in reduced power mode is a RPITA!
Dealer replaced idle valve under warranty, no prob. Did take an entire day though.
