X pipe questions

Guys, I'm thinking of adding a X-pipe, but I don't want to get a tune. Call me paranoid, but I'm just want to be messing with ECU. Been there, done that, just not interested in doing this to this car.

Now, I know that many of you guys get a tune after getting the X-pipe, so the first question is how many ponies am I leaving on the table because of this?

Second question is, which X-pipe will not throw a CEL? I know many manufacturers state that their products do not throw a CEL, but after reading a few threads it appears that many do. What's not clear to me is if the install was incorrect (damaged O2 sensor), or there are design deficiencies (thinking the encore/fabspeed thread here) which need to be recitified.

No X-Pipe will throw a code. The secondary cats do not have O2 sensors so no worries. Now if you want to replace the front cats to my knowledge the only high-flow cats that will not throw a code are the Fabspeed units. All other high-flow cats or straight pipes would require a tune to remove the check engine light.

Replacing the primary cats are where most of the gains are.

+1

The Fabspeed x-pipe w/hfc's is the only one I've heard that doesn't throw a check-engine light.

Also, if you go without a tune, I'm guessing you're probably leaving 10-20 hp on the table, maybe? A tune not only helps gain power, but it also helps tie in all your mods with the car, so your car can perform even better.

And I also believe Robo Squirrel has some vids of his Encore & Fabspeed set-up, since I believe he and you (OP) have the same rear exhaust.

If you (OP) would like to listen/see those vids, I'd PM him so that he may be able to send you a link to them.

Good luck!

Thanks for the responses guys. Yes, I have the same exhaust as Robo so the vids were very helpful.

Is anyone a bit scared to replace the cats because the e46's had some problems with them, and I may be wrong, but I believe the dealer has to replace them up to 8 years.

I think you are the exception. A lot of owners of the AA Xpipe and HFC are getting errors, unless it is tuned out. AA has admitted itself that it will throw a CEL unless you tune it out.
