Dealership lost my key
I never recieved my second key from the dealer and after going back several times asking for it, they finally came clean and said they can't find it. They said they'd order me one. This of course leaves me feeling uncomfortable knowing a key that can open/start my car is floating around somewhere.
What's everyones take on this? Should I insist on all new keys or install of additional alarm or what? Can they reprogram the current key for new freq and start? |

So they just gave you one key and never told you that you should have two! It took the fact that you kept going back and asking for it to own up to what really happened.... If that happened to me then I would want two new keys.

I wouldn't exactly worry about the BMW dealership stealing your car. I would imagine that they could easily do that without your keys. Since I'm guessing that every key can be scanned by BMW to know which car it's for, I would say your key probably got thrown out or given to someone else by mistake - and they may never know it's not the right key. If you don't trust them, what good what it do to even ask them to reprogram all the keys?

I'm sure they can delete that missing key from the ECU in your car. So whoever has they key fob will be able to open your doors/trunk with the key that's on the key fob but can't unlock it via the buttons and also can't start the car.

Just simply tell them "Then you shouldn't have lost my key. Now you need to make it right by your customer."
Or just tell them you'll go above them and report the dealership's error directly to BMW. What you're asking for ISN'T anything extraordinary at all.

The likelihood of someone finding a key & knowing it will fit your car if they come across it is remote to say the least. If the key had a tag attached to it with your name address and license plate number it would be a different story. Don't sweat it a bit.
Anything more than getting a replacement key is a waste of time and big money. |

Dont most keys (not talking about BMW) match other cars? There are only so many possible combinations...
Example: If i take my 2001 Toyota Celica's keys and use them on every single door of every single Celica I see I am bond to be able to open one

Didn't they waste my time going back and forth having to ask for the key? This car purchase is big money out of my pocket- The cost to them fixing this situation isn't my concern. |

When we picked up our 135i, the dealership gave us the wrong 2nd key. I had dropped the boss lady off at home and went to use "my" key and it didn't work. I went back to the dealership and pushed the buttons. A new 5 series in the lot lights lit up. I had a chuckle over that. Got the right key and just went home.
That's probably what happened. Someone accidentally got your key. Probably never use the 2nd key so they probably don't know yet it didn't work. I wouldn't stress over it. |

I can understand they lost the key, stuff happens. The fact that they did not come clean and dragged it on, I would call BMW NA. That is unacceptable. When I called BMW on my local dealer you would not believe how things changed for the better after that and my issue was they did not want to fix a warranty issue. They lied to you and IMO should be punished.

I am not sure if they are 'shady' or they just ever bothered to look. I don't think they would lie I hopefully don't return. You wouldn't tell someone you couldn't find the key until you try to find it. Certainly they are pretty slack in following it up.
I guess up to you what you want to do. The likelihood that someone is going to empty your car out, that's very low. But as there is still a possibility of that happening, it would be up to what you are comfortable with. If you did loose everything, you know the liable party is your dealer - I guess that gives you a chance to buy new stuff.

For some reason unkown to me and my dealer I have 3 keys for mt 08 X5. All 3 of them work. So this shows that more than 2 can be programmed. |
