LOUDEST intake?
Hey guys,
Both myself and a friend with a 335i are looking to buy new intakes for our cars. He wants the most noise possible, and I'm thinking of going the same route. Pick your choice!

remove lid from air box - take out filter - stretch tights over top of airbox - start engine...............
Cost - 1 pair of tights or 1 stocking stolen from the missus underware draw Time - 30 seconds Sound - loud as shit wait till you hear you engine after a few thousand miles too, it will sould like a galvanised bucket full of assorted nuts and bolts being hit with a 10lb sledge hammer On a serious note - I had the Riss Racing stage 3 kit and it sounded lovely.

maybe you should look into exhausts if you want noise, you wont hear the intake as much as you would a aftermarket exhaust.
and if you want more 'noise' you can get diverter valves

No matter what intake you get it's not going to be that loud since it's a turbo car. I remember getting an intake for my E46 325Ci and it was loud as sh1t. I was expecting the same for my 135i and was a little disappointed.

I want to hear the turbos spool more. Will an intake help with that? I think im gonna try and remove the air filter, do the panthose mod and go for a blast to see if that does anything.

I had the BMS dual cones and it definately gave that whoosh of air sound. I later switched to the Riss racing intake with snorkel and scoops. Now it seems like the whoosh of air sound is about the same maybe slightly louder, but I hear the turbo spool. It was right after I switched to the riss that I even realized what the spool sounded like. Kinda loud now. BTW I also have the AR DPs which also are supposed to make the spool louder.

This is the first car I've had with an intake, turbo or NA, so please excude my ignorance. It seems like a turbo car would have a louder noise at the intake since the turbo is actively sucking air. Why would the NA car be louder?

Agreed, the turbo with an intake should sound louder than NA!
I installed the BMS DCI yesterday and the whoosh is great! I prefer hearing that kind of sound than just a loud exhaust. You can't hear turbo whine, just the suck of air from the filter. |

Tonight while I was getting fueled up I decided to pull the intake filter and see what kind of noises could potentially develop from doing so.
Warning! When I pulled the filter I noticed debris in the Fresh Air side of the intake. I actually had a leaf, a wood chip and a good amount of sand like granules. I vacuumed out the intake side after fueling and then took it out. I left the filter and the filter cover off the engine. Holy God! Its perfecT! I need to figure out how to have this noise all the time without worrying about engine health, the Dinan/Factory warranty. The question begs, will pantyhose really filter the engine air properly? I could care less about exposing the engine to slightly hotter air in November. It looks like the underneath of the filter cover has baffles to keep the noises down. The oil temps actually looked cooler with all this stuff off as well. Looks like im gonna have an intake sooner than later lol.... |

Ummm..Ummm..Are people for real with this pantyhose shit? I thought it was a joke, but man running the car with no filter and then thinking of putting panty hose on...not good. Now as for load. I had an Injen on and I could no doubt here the turbos "spool". However as soon as I got my exhaust I couldnt hear jack but the exhaust. Probably any dual cone filter will be the loudest.

Yea, no way im going to run the car with Just pantyhose on it but damn it sounds good! I already put the car back together, it was just a quick experiment! THe BMS Dual cone looks like a quick fix. It doesnt look like a tough install at all.

It was a joke. I had no doubt it would sound like you wanted it too as the empty box becomes an acoustic chamber a bit like the "bell" of a trumpet.
I didn't realise anyone would actually go and try it !!!!!!!!!!! Please, please, please do not at anytime leave your car like this you WILL damage your engine. I am sure your run around the block will have done no damage this time, but best not do it again eh ?

Fishnets seem to provide the loudest sound, and they will filter large rocks and small birds....

Take a coffee can and glue it to the back of your exhaust. Then get some really cool tuner stickers and put them all over your car (they give 5whp a piece, btw). If it isn't loud enough yet, just record your favorite supercar intake noise and tape the recorder to your intake. Then, when you want it to be LOUD, just press play.

I love how refined my BMW is. I just like certian noises. I like to hear my Turbo whoosh. I dont think anyone on here is going to tape a can to their muffler or make a Fast and Furious mix tape, so why be a wiseass about it? Well, i guess it is mildly entertaining. Seems more sinister in nature though... My BMS makes all the noise I need. I like that you have to push the car to really hear it, I love driving with the windows down in manual mode BurgerBoyz |
