2010 HPFP Failure Rate
Has anyone with a 2010 Model car had any HPFP Failures? Just trying to figure out if its likely in my car. I noticed that BMW only extended the HPFP warranty for 08/09 models.....

We have the same part, just as likely to fail unless you have a December build onwards and you'd have a new pump.

Hopefully this "new pump" is also the replacement for existing failed pumps.
I'm going in on Monday to get my HPFP replaced for the second time. The first one lasted about 20,000 miles. The second (current) one lasted only 8,000 before long cranks and rough idle returned.

Mine was done in December at about 5000mi, replaced with the old pump. Soooo...we'll see how long it is until I get the new pump. I *think* I had the very first sign of a long crank the other day. Might have been my imagination, but after starting I had an involuntary pause in my mind and I went "uhhh...what was that?" I've put about 3000 mi on the new pump...

There is a thread already about the new pump...943. It has failures also. I'm on my second pump, I told my lemon dude I'd give it one more before taking the case.

Taken from my post in the other thread:
"Happened to stop by the dealer yesterday. My salesman mentioned that in the past 2 weeks, 2 2010 1ers were in for fuel pumps. One had a couple thousand miles and the other had about 6 thousand. NOT GOOD. I'm just about to hit 2K on mine. This crap pisses me off."

The fact that they were 2010 cars doesn't mean they had the new pump for certain. You'd need to know the build dates to know for sure. I'm not saying the new pumps aren't going to fail, but I don't think anyone knows for sure that they have at this point. |

I'm starting to think BMW is not fixing these pumps on purpose - to lower number of people modding these cars. I think if the N54 drivetrain was rock solid almost everyone would have a JB3/Procede.

Odd.....my ex gf and I both have 2008 N54 engines. Mine - 135 6 speed. Hers 335 auto.
Both of us have over 10k miles and have had zero HPFP issues. Both located in Lancaster county PA. Does that mean we have special fuel or something? |

To get more power to meet the increased boost, yes, you need fuel. But not through pressure. Almost always through increased injector pulse width. Far easier to open them longer than it is to increase fuel pressure more than it already is.

Fuel pressure isn't increased by tunes on these cars, and the piggybacks aren't causing the ECU to operate outside of its capabilities. The additional fuel comes from holding the injectors open longer. On a PD (positive displacement) pump (which the HPFP is) it's actually harder on them to throttle them than to just let them run wide open at their rated pressure. |
