do i need to call the bomb squad or does the timing belt tick?
i got my 128 last fall, only drove it a bit and then put it away for the winter. was cleaning car and had it idling and noticed a ticking noise coming from the car! Is this the normal sound, or is my timing belt or something screwed up. This ticking is really loud and constant.

There is a ticking problem thread for N52. May be you should check that one.

I took my 2008 128i in a couple of weeks ago because I got tired of the valve train ticking. The first time I told them about it in February they told me the sound was normal but to bring it back in if it got worse...which it did. They replaced the lifters because they had " the wrong casting number". Which tells me that it is a known issue and some one at the factory made a mistake when the motors were assembled. When I picked it up there was no ticking but a few days later it returned. I took it back in and the mech said that there was no unusual sound from the motor. I asked if he could bring up another 128 and let me compare the sound. They both sounded the same but I still think no motor made by BMW should sound anything but smooth and have no ticking at all..... I guess we will all have to see how things develop in the future after more miles are put on everyone's 128's and more people complain.

LOL First, you dont have a timing belt. Thank your God that you dont have to do that type of maintenance. This is coming from a B5 Audi guy! Second your N52 engine has a chain driven valve train.....no maintenance required unless you get lazy on changing the oil....then you would have to replace the chain "guides"....big PITA.
Any how.........you need to check out the n52 thread about ticking noise...many have it and have complain about it.. Many have posted, that a nice running the RPM up to 6500k will make some of this noise go away....
