Autocross in the wet... pics & vid

If anyone hasn't figured it out yet... rain is not a friend to rear wheel drive cars, especially running in STU against AWD STIs and EVOs... Coned on 3 of 4 runs and did a 360 spin on the other run... oh well had lots of fun.

It was my first event with Berk cat back on the car, sounded great! You can hear it in the video when there isn't too much wind noise. I also, luckily, swapped out the Hotchkis swaybar for the stock bar for the event, so the front end wasn't quite so stiff.

Video, not my fastest run, but only had the camera on the car for 1 run due to the rain...

Gotta love Autocross in the rain

Wish we had that much space in Hawaii. Our courses are a lot smaller, tighter and a lot more technical.

Cool vid, autocross in the rain puts hair on ur chest. I had a older maxima I autox, and 1 drop of rain hit the ground and my car spun out. I'm going autox this weekend, if it rains I hope my car (now a 135i) can keep its grip.

I like ur color

If it makes you feel better this is the LARGEST autocross site in the nation, as far as I know I guess that's why they are having SCCA Solo Nationals there for the next few years. It is big enough to have 2 45-50 second courses (hitting top of 2nd and even into 3rd gear in some spots on both courses) plus paddock for 1200 cars and a practice course, that's what we had out at this site last year for Nationals. It is definitely worth the trip if you get the chance, lots of fun courses even at regional events. In June we are having a Mirrorkhana event with 2 mirrored courses, 1 car on each course and it's a race to the finish, no timing, double elimination. Sounds like it is going to be LOTS of fun.

This course was pretty much 1 side of the ProSolo course from earlier this month, run backwards with a few small tweaks. The course would've been tons of fun if it hadn't been raining... 1 thing I learned with the 135i in the rain is you really need to slowly roll onto the throttle when exiting corners/turns in the rain, otherwise you are going to get sideways or spin...

Back in the old days (late 80's and early 90's) before NRSCCA lost that site for Safer Barrier testing we had huge courses and I could get over 100 mph in my CRX. I seem to remember that the rain came down so hard at the Divisionals (1990) there one year that it was over my shoes.

I may have to come back and autocross there again for old times sake.

I see Jerry is still taking photos too!

I've heard stories about that Divisionals... There was some rain last year at Nationals, the water was so deep in one spot when a car went through the water splash knocked down all of the cones in that spot...

Yep, Jerry is still taking photos. Between him and me (I'm the person behind GotCone) we cover local events pretty well...
