DCI v. Stock Airbox
FYI,
This weekend i am going to do some quarter mile passes. I have gone there twice and my runs are fairly consistent. My only engine mods at this time are Procede tune and DCI. I will be testing the DCI versus the Stock Intake to see which produces quicker times. To me a dyno analysis for intake comparisons is not very good because they have to use fans and that will never be very accurate to determine intakes and which actually makes your car faster on the street. Because there is so much time between runs, the car is semi-cooled by the time you run next and i have plenty of time to switch intakes. I will try to get three runs in each. |

My gut tells me there will not be any significant difference. If anything at elevated boost levels the DCI might be a bit quicker. If you are regularly in stop and go traffic yes DCI will probably heatsoak quicker but you probably aren't going to be racing around in traffic.

Nice I love how you are going to do a real life comparison and these are what we need to truely tell which is better as there has been countless discussions.

I'll doubt that you will find any conclusive verdict, since there are so many factors which will affect your E.T. time.

Maybe not..but like i said my runs are fairly consistent...therefore if there is a ET difference one way or another it will tend to show its a result of the different intakes. Remember im going to do the comparo by switching intakes at the track.

There are many variables that effect times and or a dyno run so I doubt you are going to be able to measure the relatively small improvement of an intake alone. If you couple it with a software upgrade and allow the car 100-200 miles to adapt, then you will start to notice the difference over stock.

No offense but all vendor comments should be taken with a grain of salt.

We know there are many variables but it's still an interesting experiment. It's more conclusive than any dyno sheet I've seen thus far. If there are any differences in times attributed to swapping the intakes it will be very interesting.

Went to the track but was getting half CEL lights... So i'll have to do it again. There was a spill on the track that took forever so i just decided to get in couple passes with the Stock Airbox. My times were about .2 second slower with lower trap speeds by about 5mph than my usual times..but all of this was also considering the half-cel lights were coming on in third gear. So I will do it again.
I'll give my impressions of the switch though. Result = DCI setup for me. The stock airbox is much quieter and sounds smooth compared to the more raucus DCI. The stock airbox might have a little more low end torque but it feels like it loses a bit after 4k rpm. Also i feel like the throttle response is not as good and as a result the turbo isnt as quick spooling. On the freeway i expected that the sort of ram air effect my make it feel faster but again, i felt as if the DCI felt better. In the end, .2 seconds loss (if that is even accurate) isnt much so if you don't race and want a quiter ride then just keep the stock airbox. |
