2.40.1 Software Update

Took the car in today to get the alarm programmed and my SA mentioned that there is a recall. He didn't go into too much detail, but the work order states that I'm getting upgraded to 2.40.1 or higher.

Anyone know what this software version is all about? I don't know if this is the older DCT recall because he said it just came out.

If you bring your car in for service, they'll do it whether you want it flashed or not. It's part of the BMW service warranty/contract.

Probably some minor software update, has nothing to do with the drivetrain, engine, DCT, etc. like the last one a few months back.

The work order specifically stated "recall". But I hope it doesn't have anything to do with any of those parts.

Probably a state mandated emissions update.

I hope this new software update will make me a better driver, drive fast and not get tickets, be able to drift a 90 degree with laser precession, improve my 10K running time, fix my cable TV and make my Internet connection faster.

Be careful of this update if you are running after market softwear. I am at my dealer just now for service and my service adviser (used him for years), advised me not to update as this is BMW way of combating aftermarket softwear and making its uploads more difficult. I was allowed to decline the update on the softwear per his advise. If you dont have softwear on your car and dont plan to add it, then its probably a good update to have installed.

I would extend that to say be careful of sofware updates in general. BMW has introduced new bugs (probably "features" in their book) with some of these updates. If your car is operating properly as it is, I would avoid getting the latest update. Just MHO.

this is not a DCT upgrade then? But simply a coding change to restrict 3rd party software? No other major changes?

OK, I just had this update done last week...took them 3 days and they busted up my Vorsteiner lip, but that is a totally different story. Suffice to say, they have one on order and will replace it. Anyway, they had issues getting the software to take and the radio didn't work at all for some time. They some how reloaded it and the radio now works, but my Sat Radio is missing and I don't recognize the look of my music collection. It appears all of my loaded CDs are there, but I can't search a song out and select it. CDs that didn't have any information loaded, still don't show who the artist is or what song is playing.

Anyone else seeing this w/ this update?

Sounds like it could be the SW download for SI B28 01 10 for DCT dtd Sept 2010. It is for: "Due to errors in the diagnostic software of the DCT module, the "Freeze frame data" of the DCT memory can not be read out when using aftermarket scan tools."

The SIB recommends programming the car with ISTA/P 2.39.0 or a more recent version, integration level E89x-10-09-501 or higher

I think I remember seeing it somewhere in the idrive, vehicle info maybe. I had this update a couple months back and it did take care of the DCT issues and some other things changed but nothing I can remember so they werent earth shattering items.
