Any way to increase the range of the remote?

Maybe it's just me, but it seems like the range of the remote is a lot less than any other car I've owned. What more, the range for the auto-top-down feature for the roadsters seems to be even less (I'm guessing it's a safety/liability thing).

Has anyone else noticed this? Is there any easy way to extend the range?

Yes, our range is only a few feet, versus tens and even hundred+ feet for some other cars. I don't know why.

to extend the range of ur remote, hold the metal bit of the key up against the skin under ur chin whilst pressing the lock or unlock buttons. u'll notice immensely improved range, albeit still not quite as far as other vehicle remotes.

^lol
there is a DIY out there for extending the range on our remotes
it has to do with the sub par antenna inside the rear view mirror
u can solder a longer wire to increase range

This works even better if you have braces.

haha this is pretty funny thread. i seriously don't quite know how holding the metal bit up to our heads extends the range by that much. as jeremy clarkson mentioned, it really is almost double, which is astonishing to say the least. some kind of amplification going on obviously....

Basically you are using yourself as an antenna.

It extends the range because your head is filled with fluid so it acts like a conductor. I've also seen it mentioned that the cranium acts like a nice parabolic antennae.

Here's a NYTimes article (registration required, bleh)

The range blows. My spare key set won't even unlock the doors half the time, which is embarrassing. Someone on here once said you need to alternate keys to keep them charged through the ignition, is this BS? When I had my G37 the dealship said this is how it worked as well, but my friend pointed out the battery in the fob was not rechargeable so that kinda blew that theory.

No, this is not BS. It is true. The batteries in our keys are charged when they're in the ignition and the car is on/running.

I just asked my friend how he knew the Infiniti dealer was bs, the contacts were plastic. Of course that car didn't have a key either, it was an intelligent key where you just pushed button to get in the car and to start the car, which I kinda miss to be honest. Are fob batteries under warranty?

Sometimes even entire keys are warranted. You may want to give it a try if said key fob doesn't work even after a week's worth of driving and charging in the ignition
Otherwise, you'd hafta buy another one for like $100+
Or just unlock the car manually each time like the good old days

I've searched this forum and others for the same reasons...have not found any direct answers myself. Hope someone can provide some answers/solutions.

I generally get triple the range with the "key on chin" trick. The only downside is being videoed and ridiculed on youtube. I can walk at a fast pace and have the roof down by the time I get to the car, in most circumstances. Seems to give the best range when approaching the car at about 45 degrees to the front with no other obstructions or cars around.

If you have a key that no longer works you might want to try this before you spend cash on a new key. Use the dead key for a few days to charge the battery The key can also go dead due to pressing the lock button more than 10 time in 10 seconds when near the car.

Method 1:
1. Working from within the vehicle and with the doors shut
2. Turn ignition to position 1 and back to off within 5 seconds.
3. Remove the key from ignition and press and hold the unlock button for 15 seconds during this time press the key lock button 3 times within 5 seconds.
4. Release both buttons.
5. Doors will lock and unlock to show correct programming has occurred.

Method 2:
To do this procedure you need to have one working key and one key that needs to be programmed.
1) Get in and close all doors.
2) Turn on the ignition and turn off quickly. (No more than 5 seconds) to start the process. Next action must take place within 30 seconds.
3) Remove the 1st key.
4) Hold the key up near your left shoulder (this is so it is closer to the remote receiver antenna.
5) Hold down the unlock button and press the lock button 3 times. Release the unlock button and the doors lock which confirms the operation.
6) Quickly repeat steps 4 & 5 for key #2 etc.
If it does not work, try doing the keys in opposite order. Key 2 then key 1, vs 1 then 2.

Method 3:
Alternate if you do not have a working remote
1. Turn key to position 1 five times very quickly 2. Remove key 3. Hold unlock button then press lock button 3 times, release unlock button.
4. If you have another key do the same button pressing within 30 seconds 5. Turn on ignition to finalise.
PLEASE NOTE: This programming procedure programs the remote control part of the key. Any transponder chip for the immobiliser (starting of car) will not be programmed and must be done by a specialist.

Those of you that have a roadster might like this. You will only need to press the lock or unlock 3 times ( no need to press and hold for the 15 seconds ) and you will alsobe able to put the top up from the key.
http://www.techtronics.de/xtc/produc...Interface.html

I installed this in my 04 and removed it when totaled and reinstalled in my 06 and I love it. This is a really nice mod especially for the 03 which no soft top operation from the key at all.
