I got mine patched, it depends on the severity and how long you were running with the puncture. I would still get it checked out, save me over $500.

The repair / no repair debate has gone on for a while.
Ive seen tires on the inside that were run for a while after a puncture. They were run too long without enough air to protect from sidwall heat build up. basically the inside sidewalls were all shreaded.. obviously this will be seen when the tire is dismounted to patch.....but sometimes you cant se the damage or its just about too start.. thats the chance you take..

Sorry to hear about the tire. I had one patched last Monday cause some jackass put a nail in it (all the other BMWs at the same event got nails also). As long as the nail isn't close to the sidewall I guess all is good from what I was told.

Not over here! When you have one of those "hot patches" installed in the tire's thread... the tire shop dismounts the tire, then puts the patch in a vise-like device... it cures in a few minutes. Then they remount the tire and ballance it. No loss of speed rating!
I had one of my tires on my VW repaired this way. It's not cheap, at 40 euros for the "hot patch" repair. Quote:

I've had my Vette in excess of 175mph on patched tires. If done correctly, I have no worries. On the other hand, I wouldnt trust a plugged tire near those speeds.

I had mine plugged instead of a patched. My TPMS went red, I drove it under 60km/h to my bmw dealership which was less then then 30 mins away. BMW didn't repair my tire I decided to get a second opinion from Kaltire.

If you have run flats, you should have rim and tire insurance.
Under no circumstance should a run flat be repaired. Which ever run flat you have ( if their stock then it's bridgestone re 050a) check with the manufacturer they will tell you the same. Never repair a run flat!!

2. Bridgestone permits RFT repair under certain circumstances: "Is it possible to repair a Run-Flat tire that has been punctured? It depends on how far and at what speed the car was driven after the puncture was sustained. Repair is possible only if deemed so by the tire sales store. Preconditions include a puncture of less than 6mm for both side-reinforced type and support-ring type Run-Flat tires, plus minimal damage to the support ring in case of the latter. However, it is strongly recommended that the tire is replaced as its durability will have been weakened after being repaired." http://www.bridgestone.com/sc/runfla.../qa/index.html Tom |

When i bought my 135i the dealer told me that here (Australia) you CAN get a runflat repaired, but in Europe you can't because they have the no speed limit autobahns there.

I was also curious to see what a manufacturer had to say - they hedge a bit, but at least Bridgestone seems to be honest about it.
I suspect that BMW is afraid of being sued if someone repairs a damaged RFT and has an accident - so they simply offer a blanket "Do not repair RFTs". As the Corvette has had OEM RFTs for years, I wonder if Chevrolet also has the same prohibition. Tom |

I had a slow leak caused by an average size nail in my Bridgestone LM-25 run-flats in the thread. BMW would not fix it. Went to Goodyear and they said run flats are just like normal tires, you can repair anything that's not in the sidewall or near the shoulder. But, what they had to do is dismount the tire and patch from the inside and then remount and balance. Not bad for $42.00 and all is still fine.

TIRE REPAIR: Like any other Goodyear speed rated high performance tire, the Goodyear Run-Flat EMT tire may be repaired to correct a nail-hole puncture in the tread, but proper materials and procedures must be used. Contact a Goodyear Run-Flat EMT service facility for information on proper repairs. |
