Oh look another tyre thread
so i am buying a set of wheels in 18x8.5/9.5 +45 and am subsequrntly looking for new tyres, now as far as i can gather i will need 225x40x18 & 245x35x18 sizes..
i've been looking on tirerack and have found the following http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....omCompare1=yes AND http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....omCompare1=yes now given that everything else in this size is over 1k it will attract the customs duties, so i dont really want to break that barrier.. can anyone give an opinion on the above tyres or suggest any others that might be suitable |

Personally neither of those would be on my shopping list... and some people have been getting lucky lately in ordering tyres worth slightly above 1k and slipping under the GST radar

Not certain of this -others will be able to confirm.
My understanding is that the $1000 limit doesn't include shipping. In other words, as long as the purchase prise for the goods is <$1000, you're OK. If that's the case, you have a whole new set of options. Anyone?? |

It's $1K exclusive of shipping. Should qualify you for most tyres for your stock 18s. You should consider a square setup to get rid of the understeer - 225 all around has worked pretty well for me.

Being that the KDW2 fronts are on backorder, this could be about a month or two out.
The V12's are great tires and all of our past customers have been extremely happy with them. They are competitively priced with great tread wear. -Charles@VMRWheels

I got Dunlop Direzzas in 225 front and 255 rear, they were $860 from tirerack WAY below the $1k threshold. Given that you want a smaller rear size, that's even cheaper. Advan Neovas IIRC are ~$970 which is still under the barrier.
Why are you thinking of putting the stock width on the rear? The grip on our cars is tenuous already so you should try get as much of it as you can. 255 fit with no issues.

ok so upon further reading
Tyre Width Equivalency http://www.kouki.co.uk/utilities/vis...ize-calculator 8.5 inches = 225 mm and the ideal tyre sizing is between 235 & 245 mm with the max being 255 9.5 inches = 245 mm and the ideal tyre sizing is between 255 & 265 mm with the max being 275 so if was to run my original suggestion 225x40x18 & 245x35x18 i would be running an ever so slight "stretch" which in conjunction with a fender roll will help with fender clearance.. upon FURTHER research this is what the stretch will look like 225x40 on an 18x8.5 and 245x35 on an 18x9.5 i can live with this "stretch" Last edited by 130iguy; 05-10-2011 at 10:25 PM.. |

That's a pretty standard price for KU31s, which lean very far towards the cheaper side of things. Try upping the quality of the tyre and then ask for a quote, you'll be gobsmacked at how much local prices are. Order yourself a nice set off tirerack, and I still recommend 255 rear.

Hold on, do you want stretch or do you want handling and grip? 255 will definitely give you more grip, but won't have the stretch look. If you're doing it for aesthetic reasons then 245 make sense.

Yeah, but with the stretch look you get the advantage of having the rim there to protect the tyres when you get too close to the gutter.

225 on 8.5" and 245 on 9.5 is conservative. I think its a good balance between stretch and width...its not a 700Hp Supra, you dont need anything wider than 245. The main thing is to shoot for a size that still gives the car close to standard rolling diameter..
Theres nothing I hate more than a nice set of wheels with the wrong tyres...Or the wrong combination that just shouldnt be on the car because the rolling diameter is just too big and no matter how far you lower it , it still looks jacked. |
