Nav problems
My nav system has started misbehaving pretty bad. The position of the car on the map seems to be about 1/4 mile away from where it really is and the indicated direction (compass pointer in the upper left corner) shows 180 degrees opposite of the real heading.
Is this an upgrade issue? The car is a 2006 MR and has never been upgraded. I tried to reboot the DVD already by taking it out and putting it back in. Also disconnected and reconnected the battery. No luck.

This is the price you pay for having a ///M, it's so bloody quick your car is in flux and entered another dimension hence in two places at the same time. ///M owners will confirm this,,,,,S.I. owners will dispute this!
Apart from what you have already tried i'm lost on this, maybe somebody will have a solution or a trip to the stealers will |

I would start by updating to v32 software, which is the last software for our navs. Only 10 bucks or so. Search the forums for the part number, Ron has posted it before.

You could also try disconnecting the satellite antenna and cleaning the connectors. You definitely want to upgrade the software as Beta said. Also, I invested in an updated set of DVD's. The newer set does make a difference - at least here in New Hampshire.

Could be the antenna. This past week my nav started mis behaving too - it would show me driving in the ocean or driving through some local roads but not where I actually was. Dealer replaced the nav antenna and now its fine.

I'd start w/ the hardware first since it's cheap and easy to do; like gatorfast and jrich4411 suggested. Although I could be wrong, I highly doubt it's a SW issue if your nav was working fine all this time. I would suspect a HW issue first. If your FW all of a sudden became corrupted, you would probably have issues other than just have an corrdinate accuracy issue.

Try the hardware. If that doesn't work, it's probably the nav antenna. Mine went out about two years ago.

Where's the GPS antenna located? Is it something that's easily replaced?

Good question on the location of the GPS antenna. I thought the rear fender antenna served the GPS, so I removed it, cleaned it and put dilectric grease on the threads. No help to the GPS. If this is not the GPS antenna, I would like to know where it is.

On the Roadsters it is just under the windshield glass top center above the rear view mirror. I'd assume the coupe is the same. On the roadster the plastic trim pops off by simply removing both sun visors. The antenna clips on to a mount right there and easily comes out. There is also a connector on the wire that simply unscrews. 10 minute job to pull it.

I think on the coupe it involves pulling the headliner - not positive though.

3.0i GPS systems are only about 1/8 of a mile off.

Here is an update to this for anyone who needs a reference. Ordered the new software, was a bit surprised when I saw the package postmarked, 'Romania' but whatever. The firmware installed easily enough, and I selected the 'M' logo for the opening screen, which is cool.
It did not immediately solve my problem. Took the car out, showed it the satellites, etc. Still showed my position as being in the ocean, which is about 2 miles from my location. So I poked around some more. Removed the inside windshield surround covers and the visors, and disconnected and reconnected the co-axial cable a few times to make sure the connections were good. Put it back together, took it out for a drive and it re-positioned itself correctly. I can't say much for the quality of the new map disks that came with the firmware. But at least the nav system is working again, and it beats a repair bill from the stealer now that the car is out of warranty.

You will noticed that the DVD player appears to be a bit more "chatty" (working more) than normal with these "bootleg" DVD. At least that was happening with mine. I tried it for a couple of months and decides to put back the OEM disc fearing that the "bootleg" disc will wear out my DVD player prematurely. Just something to think about.
