X5M AND M3
So I bought my X5M in January and love it. I've always wanted an M3 but after buying my X5M I lost interest. Their performances are very similar, the X5M actually feels faster, and they both have awesome looks and great drivability. I DD my X5M but would like to change it up a bit. If I don't go for the M3 I'll probably find a different car though. My main question is: Would owning both an M3 and an X5M become redundant after a while as they are extremely similar performance-wise?

I own both. X5M as DD and the M3 with gintani race exhaust as a second car. The X5M is fast, but its an SUV- no comparison to driving an M3.
If your going to do the GT3 go 997.2- |

I'm not entirely sure the driving pleasure would be the same on an m3 and x5m. Huge weight difference means huge driving difference imo. Picking up a nice used gt3 would be awesome. I am almost in the same situation as you. I love the m3 but also love the x5m. However the exhaust note alone on the m3 is enough to win me over. But i still LOVE the x5m and m3. I would love to have both

The bottom line is if you know how to drive the M3 and X5M are world's apart. If you don't know how to drive they are the same.

Hey bro, I would love to give you some solid advice on this one. I can tell you that the cars are completely different animals. I feel like the X5M has too much power for me to drive smoothly. Its always find the X5M to be extremely "trigger happy" on the throttle whereas the M3 is a much more civilized car to drive by a great difference. By personal preference, I would drive my M3 all day long because I feel like driving the X5M, I may land myself in jail.
M3>X5M despite the massive power difference. When Im in the X5, I feel like I am in a fucking ferrari lol. The pull on that thing is crazy, instant power on demand. But thats not what I want to feel when im driving around. Its great at night when there's no cars on the road @ 2am, but otherwise, I cant stand driving it in traffic, too jerky. I promote the idea of you getting an M3, you will really appriciate both cars but from completely different ways. I would never sell the X5M or the M3, as they are both the best vehicles of their kind in their class. I appriciate and love them both as much as one could, but they are just two completely different cars in terms of the driving experience. Its a beautiful thing to have both cars to choose from. When you wake up in the morning and ask yourself "hrmmm, which car do I feel like driving today, the X5M or the M3?" then you know, its a good life I hope you pull the trigger and get inna mtreeeee

Even better,in that case 997.1RS should not be more than 85-90K depending on mileage and condition.
IMO why have two M cars? Go for something more hardcore and driver focused. The X5 M already has the comfort and everyday usable power for daily driving.Drive the GT3 a few times a week for that perfect balance of automobile ownership experience. |

Having driven both (and the E60 M5) I would say that they are a blast to drive. The X5M has the advantage of practicality and the AWD is great in winter.
Personally, I prefer a lighter car. Power, brakes and great tires overcome inertia when accelerating or decelerating, in the corners however the lighter car prevails. Just my personal preference. |

I also have both cars and let me also echo what's been said above. Both cars drive completely differently. Both are fun but they really are very different to drive. They have vastly different throttle characteristics as well an handling behaviors. The m3 is a precision machine. The x5m's power is massive throughout the rpm range and it isn't really subtle in the delivery. For what it is, it handles incredibly but I can't imagine anyone every prefering it to the m3 in the twisties. The m3 requires you to choose your gear properly for perfect power delivery. Its the driver's car. When I really feel like driving, I always take the m3. That being said, the x5m is perfect around the city where I live. Its vastly more comfortable over the bumpy roads and it really is fun stepping on the gas.
Ofcourse, if you are in the market for a Porsche, that is very different animal and much better on the track, though not quite the all rounder the m3 is...

I love my X5(non M) for DD and long trips, my E46 M3 gets a bit claustrophobic after a while. If I could have only one I would go with X5.

would consider them similar performance for the street, but vastly different for the track. depends on the application. Would love both, think there's little to no downside in that (except maybe MPG)

I've driven an E36, E46 SMG and both manual and DCT E92 M3's so far. I don't track my cars because the only track around St. Louis got shut down a couple of months ago and someone needs to buy it. I'd love a Porsche but the styling isn't really my thing, kind of looks like a toad from the front , and feels better suited for the track. That being said I'm still strongly considering a Carrera 4S. But the M3 is really hyped and a benchmark of a car so I'd like to experience it too. My other car is an '09 Cadillac CTS and it's a great car but boring to drive. The M3, or maybe something else, would take its place when I make the step forward. So the X5M and M3 really are that different? Obviously one's an SUV and the other would be a sedan (E90 M3) but the X5M feels very different from other SUV's I have driven in the sense that it doesn't feel or drive like one. Thanks for your input guys! It's really helping me come to a decision.
