I guess that depends if you are just in the city, or if you are out in rural areas. For city driving probably regular winter/snow tires. If rural, then studded might be better. A lot of 1 series owners go with 17 inch wheels/tires for winter driving.

205/50 17 is the best size for winter. Going with 18" might look good, but cost a lot and with the roads here, I'd be afraid to blow tires in pot holes.

Nokian is by far the best winter tires for snow and ice, If you don't take your car out in the snow and just want performance winter tires, The Pirelli 210/240 Sottozero is amazing on cold/dry pavement. If you are looking for a budget tire, General Altimax and Continental Extreme Winter Contact are good alternatives.

I picked up some non studded Bilizzaks from tirerack. I just moved from Quebec city and when I was there I never felt the need for studded tires.

You should not get studded tires unless you live in rural areas where there is always a layer of snow left on the roads.
Studded tires in cities where most of the time the tarmac will not be covered in snow will result in much longer braking distances.
