1M takes on the Cayman R Again plus Godzilla this time!

BMW 1M vs. Porsche Cayman R vs. Nissan GT-R

SPOILER ALERT:
Good read, but the 1M does'nt win. No big surprise, given the competition. The way I see it, being compared to the Cayman R(not the S) and now the GTR is a huge compliment. Pretty soon there will be a 1M vs. Ferrari vs. Bugatti comparo!

Maybe their 1M was chipped because RP said his 1M was not fast.

When I think of how little (relatively speaking, of course) I paid for my 1M and the company that it has put me in (just look at the ridiculous comparisons of this car to the MUCH more expensive metal that is out there) I can't help but grin with satisfaction....

The steering is a new one on me. Is this something you have experienced in your car?

Cayman R asks for a lot of sacrifice for a DD.

BMW 1M very little. Easy choice for me.

Good article. I wonder where they are based? The 1M had NJ plates while the Cayman had GA plates.

That Cayman R looks sweet in Silver/White with the black side stripes.

Interesting how they round the 1M up by $4000 to $50k. Maybe the Cayman isn't worth $24k over the 1M.

I find it interesting that whenever the 1M is compared to the Cayman it is always the R(a car stripped of NAV, radio, AC, sound deadening material, aluminum doors and even nylon straps instead of door handles.) Power? A whopping 10 horse increase. Many Porsche purists feel it was not even worthy of the R moniker but nevertheless, a lot to sacrifice just to be able to barely beat the 1M. The GTR comparison is flattering but we all know the GTR is way out of the 1M's league in almost every aspect.

The way I see it, the comparison should be:

135i(sport pkg) vs. Cayman
1 Series M Cpe vs. Cayman S

But I don't think Porsche would like the results.

Cayman < 135i(sport pkg) < Cayman S < 1M < Cayman R

BMW did benchmark the regular Cayman S when developing the 1M. As I recall they felt the 1M was "very close" in terms of involvement, etc, indicating they thought it was slightly behind. As you point out the Cayman R is not far from the S; purely as a sports car I think the S will still beat the 1M, maybe not in raw numbers but in overall experience.

That said, the M is much more than purely a sports car- it's still a practical car to beet. The Cayman S is much more impractical and expensive than the 1M, so coming "very close" is still an achievement. I'd certainly take the 1M over the Cayman S as a total package.

Ignoring the troll...

Both good points.

I was actually cross shopping the S4 and Cayman S when the 1M hit my radar.

I'm a big fan of the Cayman but the 1M is just so much more in terms of practicality, daily usability and ultimately, rarity.

Caymans are a dime a dozen over here in Atlanta. Not that this is a big deal for me but it's nice to have something that you don't see at every street corner.

Yep. I haven't had luck getting a 1M, still holding out hope. A friend has a Cayman S that I've autocrossed, etc- it's a great car, a little under-powered but just so good dynamically. I'm still looking for a 1M, but cross shopping a Cayman R and CPO 997 GT3. If I got the 1M it could replace my R32 as my daily; if I got the GT3 I might need to hold on to the R as it just gives up so much practicality. Not sure if I got the Cayman R; the S4 has just gotten too big for me.

Thank god. I was getting annoyed just reading the past threads/posts from that guy. (I held my tongue). Criticism is alright, but I swear...every single post was to stir up conflict!

Thanks Dave.

Thanks Dave.

Back on topic.
Decisive question: what are you gonna use the car for ? Speaking for myself, as DD and sometimes requiring 3 seats and sufficient boot space for travel luggage, the 1M wins hands down. The boot of the Cayman is a tad uncomfortable and too noisy for my daughter, I assume.
Et voilà, end of story.

All else aside I like the Cayman because it looks like a sportscar. Something elegant and yet aggressive about that car.

Couldn't agree more! One of the things that I take into account when I read reviews is how practical they are when reviewing the car. This is what makes Top Gear so fun to watch, but a lot of people forget (here's looking at the US). The practicality of the car for an everyday "Joe" is huge. I just had to carry two sheets of drywall in my car the other day. I'm an HOA president and had to fix someones damn wall! (I'm actually laughing out loud because they were only 2'x2'). BUT STILL!!! lol If I had a lotus...forget about it!

(still.......laughing........as I click......"Submit Reply").
