Fang repair
The fangs on my car had a few encounters with curbs. Nothing serious, but it bugs me enough to pay a visit to a reputable body shop. I was given 3 options:
Since #1 is no cost, I had it done first. It looks better now, maybe 80% there, but up close I can still see the rough surface. I'm thinking of going with #2, since there's a line between the bumper and the fangs, there's no blending needed. #3 seems a bit overkill. Thoughts? Thanks. John |

I had an unfortunate incident with my boss's driveway that was too steep and ended up scraping one of the fangs pretty good (see the pic below).
I was able to take it to a body shop and have it fiberglassed/re-painted up to the groove. It was $300 (payed for by my boss ) and it now looks brand new. I was told, however, that if I were to scrape it again it probably wouldn't be repairable and I'd need a new bumper ($1500 including paint/install). I've since invested in some RPI skids and hope to never test their functionality! I think the second option would be your best bet. Just have the shop make the repainting line in the groove above and nobody will ever be able to tell.

3 option. do it right, especially considering the top part with be pitted a bit after you get the bottom done.
also, go somewhere else....to uninstall, paint a bumper and re-clear it and reinstall it shouldn't be more than 400 |

I don't really understand it either. It's just what I was told and since I have no bodywork experience I can't really speculate as to why.

Thanks for the advice guys. I was also told by the body shop that BMW doesn't sell paint. The shop will mix their own to match. Does that sound right? I want to go with a shop that I know will match the paint perfectly.

I'm not sure why everyone is so protective of the fangs. They are at the bottom of the bumper and they will scrape even when you are careful. I've scraped three times now and they look about halfway as bad as that pic above by kcdedric.
Is it just that it's a bmw and you've gotta take pride in your ride? I bought mine to use, a little rash here and there just gives me piece of mind so I don't feel terrible if it gets a dent. |

Sounds right. Any reputable shop should be able to get a perfect match (they use the exact recipes for your paint color from BMW).

Aww man, I took a 3x1 inch area of paint off mine just driving through high water. You're lucky that's all the damage you did (and it's getting paid for).

#2 is the best option. A good bodyshop will be able to blend the repaint pretty easily. I had that done when I scraped up my brand new bumper, literally within a month of installing it, right after washing the car. Learned not to do that again! I think it set me back $150, but I removing and reinstalled the bumper myself.

I had my fang done for $100, and the work was INCREDIBLE. The guy does all the touch-up repairs for the local BMW dealer as his main business, an awesome find. Pics here:
