1200miles/2000km service - why?
So i just picked up today my long awaited 1M AW. Very happy! (pictures will follow)
When asked my BMW dealership here in Switzerland about the 2000 km service they were very surprised and checked in the car computer - it says first oil change in 30000km, no difference to say z435s... so im a bit confused. Also cant see anything on the service booklet we got. My question is - where does it say the car needs 1200miles/2000km service (motor and gearbox oil and differrential)? Thanks! Lukas |

Don't know where the 1200 mile service is reflected, but my car's computer definitely reflected it and I just had the service. I would definitely investigate further.

Absolutely 100% need 1200 miles service. Should be a lot sooner in my opinion but BMW knows there own equipment better than me. If I wasn't putting the first 1200 miles on the car in the first 2 days I would be doing a 500 mile oil change (that's just me though).
The reason is everything in the engine is breaking in. Meaning bits of cam, bits of rings, bits of cylander wall, bits of oil pump internals, etc are all being ground down and contaminating the oil. You would be absolutely amazed and horrified if you saw just how much comes out of the oil pan and from inside the oil filter after the first oil change. Its really important to get that crap out of the car because all the particulate will score other surfaces and prematurely shorten the life of the motor. |

Thanks for the replies guys. I do understand the importance of the 2k service, however if it's not officially supported by manufacturer BMW Switzerland is not going to pay for it (well the labour as fluids still will be charged).
Was your car computer showing service due in 2000 km? Mine is 30k... |

Please do not wait until 30k, even if you have to pay for the service.

My car showed that it needed its first service at 1200 miles from day 1 when it had 4 miles on it. It is fairly standard on any performance BMW.

I was told by the dealer to bring back in 2100 km to change the oil.
My 1M also showed in the on board computer in the meter cluster. It counted down from 2100 km to 0. Also it was due by the time. In my case, delivered on July, it was showing 01/08/2011. |

Thanks. Therefore a question to the European owners- did you have the 2000 km service indicated on your dash? Or was it pre-set to 30,000 km and you just went in anyway?
I find it weird that depending on market BMW would give so drastically different service intervals. |

Szakool, first congratulations about receiving the car; now my 1M arrived like 10 days ago and the 2000 km. service is displayed by the computer. Mine is also Euro spec. car like yours, despite the fact that I have recieved it here in Santiago de Chile which makes no difference at all.
Second, it is also in paper; you must have received the "supplementary manual" for 1M. There you will find at the maintenance related page, very clearly stating that unlike other 1 coupes, our 1M needs a 2000 km. service and indicates the oils to be changed. My dealer had and still has no clue, but that is another story of course. |

Thanks Ozinaldo. I've looked at the 1M supplementary manual but other than break-in procedure description cant see anything that would indicate e.g. oil change at 2000km. Can you give me a reference page? That would greatly help!

Page 41, under the title "Maintenance Overview", you will see first sub-title "Run-in inspection 2000km., approx. 1240 miles"...and under that the short info. about what kind of work needs to be done, change oils etc.
If you can't find this in your supplementary owner's handbook, then maybe it is only in certain language handbooks, mine is in English because I asked it to be so when I ordered the car. The handbook number at tha back cover is 01 40 2 607 726 en. Hope that's helpful. |

I think you dealer is miss informed. Have them email BMW AG for an answer. As far as I know... every Euro 1M requires a 2K km service. Trans, diff and engine oil and filter get changed. Be sure your dealer uses teh correct fluids!! 2K kms service.... The 1M uses: 2L of MTL-LT-5 trans oil 1.2L of rear diff oil. Castrol SAF-XJ+, which is: SAE 75W140 GL5 BMW LS (Castrol SAF-XJ, is the same diff oil spec'd for the M3 diff.) 6.5L of BMW full synthetic 5w30 or 0w30, or 0w40 LL-4 oil, plus oil filter (same as used on other N54 motors). And NOT Castrol TWS 10w60 as used in the M3/M5/M6! Here is the 12+ page thread on the first 1,200 mile (2K km) service for the 1M... Run in service... http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=541737&highlight=1%2C200+mile+ser vice&page=12 Some photos of the correct fluids... Castrol SAF-XJ diff fluid and MTF-LT-4 (for my 135i) trans oil. I just wanted to show you how the bottle might look here in DE. But you 1M needs MTF-LT-5!! Castrol SAF-XJ diff oil sold in 500mL bottles... BMW approved oil sold at Euro dealers... Btw... this is the cheapest place I have found that sells real BMW oils. http://www.oeldepot24.de/catalog/pro...products_id=62 Dackel |

Dackel, that was very comprehensive, thanks. Will followup wiht the dealership but anyway will do the change even if they keep saying it's only due at 30,000 km. Which sounds ridicolus...

Yea. Well... either way "us guys" in europe pay for all our services(nothing is free over here!)... so just have them do what you tell them to do. Make sure they have all the correct fluids on hand before they drain your old oil. Dack |

All of the UK cars (mine included) that I know of require a service at 1200 miles / 2000km.
My computer in the car is showing exactly this and I believe the dealer resets this count to 2000km at the PDI. My UK supplementary manual also states the running in service, so your car showing at 30,000km to the next service is definatley not right! |

All Oz cars are 2000 klms run in service and it is complimentary. Contact your dealer to have stock of the required oils ahead of time as they are difficult to obtain and usually special order only.
