How bad are summer tires in the cold?
I'm taking a 600-mile trip thru New England next week, forecast temps 30-40F, no snow, daytime only. Tempted to take my 128 with factory Goodyear Eagle NCT r/f summer tires. Generally this car is garaged in the winter, but it would be a lot more fun than my AWD wagon with snows for this trip...as long as it stays on the road and doesn't feel like I'm riding on rocks! I know the owner's manual says we should use winter tires below 45F, but anyone have experience with this? Many thanks. (Sorry if this should be on wheels & tires board, I figure there are more eyeballs here.)

long as the roads are dry...your fine.
drove year round with summers in TX & NC where winter temps hovered in the low 30s to upper 40s. If it snowed I drove the X3 or waited for it to melt off.

You should be okay as long as the roads are not snow covered. Hopefully they don't get a freak snow storm. If the roads are wet and cold, the tires will still be fine, as long as you are doing normal driving. Your stopping distance will be significantly increased, so just keep that in mind. Last year I drove all winter with bridgestone potenzas, and didn't have an issue unless the roads were snow or ice covered. Good luck, be safe, and have fun!

Yeah, what the others said. You'll be fine if the roads are clear, as the tires will warm up due to friction while driving. On snow? Well, be prepared for that. If it happens, just drive slow and VERY defensively.

The car would still be driveable if there is no snow or ice, however the stopping time and grip will be less than if it were warmer out. I wouldn't recommend driving in super low temperatures on summer tires in general however.

Watch out for frost on the roads early morning or late evening since temps will be down below 30F. You should otherwise be fine since the temps during the day will be in the 40s. Happy motoring

If no snow or rain, it will be ok..
If rain, it is doable.. If snow, do not even try...

I tried driving on ice with my summer tires and it was a disaster. Once I pulled out of my garage I couldnt get back in. Car was just tail whipping with no grip what so ever. I wouldn't dare try it. You never know if is gonna rain and its freezing temps.
